Understanding Production Dates vs. FIA Homologation Dates
When checking whether your motorsport helmet is still in date, it’s important to distinguish between the production date and the FIA homologation date. While both are critical for understanding your helmet’s validity, they serve different purposes and have unique implications for motorsport use.
What Is a Production Date?
The production date refers to when the helmet was manufactured. This date is typically found on a label inside the helmet, often printed as a month and year (e.g., 06/2023 for June 2023). The production date ensures:
- Material Longevity: Helmets have a limited lifespan due to wear and tear, environmental exposure, and material degradation.
- Shelf Life Awareness: Even if a helmet hasn’t been used, the materials (such as EPS liners and adhesives) can deteriorate over time.
For most manufacturers, helmets are recommended to be replaced after 5 to 10 years from the production date, even if they appear to be in good condition.
What Is an FIA Homologation Date?
The FIA homologation date refers to the certification period during which the helmet complies with the FIA’s safety standards for motorsport. This date is linked to the homologation standard, such as FIA 8859-2015 or FIA 8860-2018.
FIA helmets typically have a validity period of 10 years from the homologation year, after which they are no longer permitted for use in FIA-sanctioned events—even if the helmet remains structurally sound.
Key Differences Between Production and FIA Dates

Why This Matters
A helmet can still be in excellent condition based on its production date, but if its FIA homologation date has expired, it will no longer be allowed in FIA-sanctioned motorsport events. Conversely, a helmet might still meet FIA standards but could have exceeded its recommended usage period based on the production date, compromising its safety.
How to Check Both Dates
- Production Date: Look for the manufacturing label inside the helmet, typically under the liner or padding.
- FIA Homologation Date: Check the FIA label or sticker, usually located near the production label. This will include the homologation standard and year of approval.

Regarding HANS and Hybrid devices
FIA 8858-2010 HANS and Hybrid Devices
Currently, there is no specific expiration date set for FIA-homologated HANS (Head and Neck Support) and Hybrid devices under the FIA 8858-2010 standard. However, it is crucial for users to regularly inspect these safety devices for any signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. If any issues are detected, the device should be replaced immediately to ensure maximum safety and compliance. Unlike items with a fixed expiration, HANS and Hybrid devices are produced in batches and are not subject to traditional expiry dates. Instead, the FIA homologation date is what determines their compliance with current safety standards. All HANS and Hybrid devices supplied adhere to the latest FIA requirements, ensuring that they are fully up to date and ready for use in motorsport environments. By maintaining and monitoring your device, you can ensure continued reliability and protection on the track.
