New OMP FIA Helmet And HANS Device Packages For 2024

We have started 2024 by putting together a set of OMP helmet and HANS device packages. Each one pairs an FIA approved OMP helmet with a head and neck restraint, so the two pieces you need to buy together arrive together.
The packages cover both open face and full face OMP helmets, and we have built them around two quite different restraints: the Simpson Hybrid Sport and the Schroth Super Sport XLT. Here is how they differ, and which suits which kind of driver.

What is in the packages
A helmet and a head and neck restraint have to work together. The helmet needs posts for the restraint’s tethers, and the restraint needs to suit the way you sit in the car. Buying them as a package takes some of the guesswork out of that.
Our OMP packages use helmets we know well from the showroom. The GP-R is OMP’s composite full face helmet, approved to FIA 8859-2015, with four intakes in the chin, eight vents on top and HANS posts fitted at the factory. The J-R is the open face option, a lightweight composite shell with a fire retardant lining and a white peak with a tinted visor strip, also approved to FIA 8859-2015.
Each helmet is offered with either restraint, so the choice comes down to two questions: open or full face, and which style of restraint suits your car.
Open face helmets are the usual choice for rally and for many saloon drivers who want to talk to a co-driver or see more around them. Full face helmets suit open cars and anyone who wants the extra protection across the chin.
The Simpson Hybrid Sport packages
The Simpson Hybrid Sport is built differently from a traditional HANS device. It rests on your back and shoulders instead of sitting over your chest and collarbone. That makes it comfortable in cars where the seat and harness do not suit a conventional device, and easy to get out of the car with.
It is made from composite materials and is approved to FIA 8858-2010 and SFI 38.1. It fits standard HANS posts, or it can be ordered with Simpson’s M61 quick release tethers, which let you release the restraint with a pull on a cord. Sizing is by chest circumference, measured while wearing your racewear, from XS at 81 to 91 cm up to XL.
The Schroth Super Sport XLT packages
If you prefer a traditional HANS device, the Schroth Super Sport XLT is the other option. It is a 20 degree device, which suits saloons, hatches and rally cars where the seating position is fairly upright. It weighs around 800 grams, has Nomex covered shoulder pads and sliding tethers that give you more head rotation, and it comes with two pairs of winglets to locate the harness straps.
It is approved to FIA 8858-2010 and uses Schroth’s twist style clips, which are included and fit to the helmet before use. Sizing is by collar: medium for 38 to 47 cm, large for 46 cm and above.

Which restraint suits you
Garreth’s advice is to start with the car, not the helmet. If you sit upright in a saloon or a rally car, a 20 degree device like the Super Sport XLT is the natural fit. If a conventional device will not sit well with your seat and harness, or you want something easier to get in and out with, the Hybrid Sport is worth a look.
