The Bell R7 Sport Arrives: A New Era for Motorsport Helmets
We’re excited to welcome the Bell R7 Sport helmet to our in-store lineup for the very first time. This newly released model from Bell replaces the now-discontinued GP3 Sport, and it’s already making a strong impression. We’ve just received our first R7 in white, size small, and it’s on display in our showroom right now. More colour options and sizes are already on the way, and we’ll be updating our display with the full R7 range to make sure every customer can get hands-on experience with this impressive new release.
The R7 Sport represents the next step forward in Bell’s legendary motorsport helmet collection. It retains key features that drivers loved in the GP3, while updating the design, aerodynamics, and functionality with a fresh look and the latest FIA 8859-2024 safety approval. This makes it not just a worthy successor to the GP3, but a clear upgrade in both performance and protection. Whether you’re into competitive motorsport, club-level events, track days, or karting, the R7 is built to handle it all.
Having a sample model now in-store means you can get a close look at the R7’s revised shape, feel the quality of the materials, and get a sense of the fit before committing to an order. As Bell gradually phases out the GP3, we’re making sure customers have the opportunity to try the new R7 firsthand and make a smooth transition to one of Bell’s most versatile helmets yet.
Why Choose Bell? Why Choose the Bell R7?
The Bell R7 isn’t just another motorsport helmet; it’s a full redesign that builds on Bell’s race-proven experience to deliver improved performance, better airflow, and enhanced driver confidence. Designed for full motorsport use, this helmet is fully FIA 8859-2024 approved, meaning it’s suitable for a wide range of competitive events. Whether you’re tackling local sprints, club championships, endurance races, or even aggressive track day sessions, the R7 is engineered to meet the demands of serious drivers.
What really sets the R7 apart is its balance between value, protection, and design. It brings pro-level features into a more accessible price point, making it an ideal choice for both entry-level and seasoned drivers. The large chin spoiler adds frontal protection that’s especially valuable in open-cockpit cars, while the redesigned shell shape offers a modern aerodynamic profile that feels fresh in Bell’s range. This is a helmet that looks the part and performs when it counts.
It’s also an ideal option for those upgrading from older helmets, particularly if you’ve previously used the GP3 or similar models. With its improved fit, ventilation, and updated safety compliance, the R7 gives you peace of mind and modern comfort in one well-built package.
The New Bell R7: Design, Fit and Finish
The Bell R7 Sport introduces a bold and modern look to the Bell helmet lineup. It immediately stands out with its updated outer shell, offering a sharper and more angular design that feels purposeful and performance-driven. One of the most noticeable elements is the squared-off rear lip, which isn’t just aesthetic. It plays a role in improving the aerodynamics of the helmet by helping to reduce drag and stabilise airflow around the head at speed. This makes it a great choice for drivers in open-top cars where head movement and air pressure are more noticeable.
At the front, the R7 retains the prominent chin spoiler that GP3 users will be familiar with. This wide and extended lip adds a layer of frontal protection while enhancing stability and reducing buffeting during high-speed runs. It also adds to the aggressive profile of the helmet, which now feels even more in line with modern motorsport design expectations.
Inside the helmet, Bell continues its tradition of race-ready comfort. The R7 features a plush, fire-retardant interior lining that is both breathable and supportive. The ergonomic fit is designed to provide contact across the entire head without creating pressure points, ensuring long-session comfort. The visor system has also been updated, with a new push-button release mechanism that’s faster, more secure, and easier to operate with gloves on. This is a welcome change from the older push-pull system found on the GP3.
The R7 comes pre-fitted with HANS anchor posts, making it compatible with head and neck restraint systems right out of the box. Sizing runs from small through to XL, and the helmet is available in white or black finishes.
Importantly, the Bell R7 is fully FIA 8859-2024 approved. That means it meets the most up-to-date safety standards for non-F1 motorsport use and ensures you’re covered for the future of racing. This approval is essential for many competitive motorsport events, from club-level racing to international championships.
Here’s a quick summary of the key updates with the Bell R7:
- New outer shell shape with improved aerodynamics
- Updated visor mechanism with smoother operation and better sealing
- Enhanced ventilation system for improved airflow and heat management
- FIA 8859-2024 approval for compliance with modern motorsport safety requirements
- Available in black or white with a clean, timeless look
- Sizes from XS to XL for a wide fitment range
Whether you’re upgrading from an older helmet or looking for your first FIA-approved model, the Bell R7 represents a smart choice. It delivers premium features and performance at a competitive price and is backed by Bell’s long-standing reputation for motorsport safety.
Comparing the Bell R7 vs GP3 Sport Helmet
With the GP3 Sport now discontinued, it’s important to understand how the new R7 builds on its legacy. The GP3 was a hugely popular model thanks to its large chin spoiler, top-mounted ventilation, and dependable performance across many motorsport categories. The R7 takes those strengths and improves them.
Both helmets include a large chin lip that enhances frontal protection, but the R7 adds a squared rear spoiler for better aerodynamics. The visor mechanism has been upgraded on the R7 to a modern button release system, moving away from the push-pull system used on the GP3. Both helmets are HANS-compatible and provide cooling via top-mounted vents. While the GP3 remains a strong performer, the R7 offers better fitment, smoother aerodynamics, and updated FIA homologation.

Proper Helmet Fitment: Getting the Right Fit
Even the safest helmet won’t protect you properly if it doesn’t fit right. It should feel snug around your head and cheeks without any sharp pressure points. The padding needs to make firm contact all the way around, crown, sides, and cheeks. New helmets often feel tight at first, but they’ll settle in slightly with use.
Your cheeks should feel pressed in slightly (think chipmunk-style), but it shouldn’t hurt or stop you from speaking. There shouldn’t be any gaps at your temples either. If you move the helmet side to side or back and forth, your skin should move with it. If the helmet shifts on its own, it’s too loose.
Always fasten the chin strap properly and check that the helmet stays firmly in place. If you can roll it off your head, it’s too big. Watch out for pressure hotspots too, discomfort around the forehead or ears could mean the shape isn’t right for you.
At GSM Performance, we recommend coming in to try helmets on in person. We’ll help with sizing, cheek pad swaps, and make sure you leave with a helmet that’s safe and comfortable on track.
For drivers who want to take their on-track performance to the next level, Bell also offers a carbon fibre version of the R7: the XR7 Ultra Carbon. This helmet is designed with the same aerodynamic shape and safety standards as the R7 Sport but swaps the standard shell for a premium carbon fibre construction. The result is a noticeably lighter helmet that offers improved comfort over long stints and adds another layer of precision to your driving experience.
The XR7 is ideal for serious competitors who want every advantage, especially in high-intensity motorsport environments where reducing driver fatigue matters. Just like the R7, it features the latest FIA 8859-2024 homologation, a large chin spoiler, and a secure visor closure system. But its ultra-lightweight build gives it an edge for endurance drivers and racers pushing for every last tenth of a second.

Our In-Store Bell Helmet Display
At GSM Performance, we currently stock and display only the standard R7 Sport in-store, allowing customers to try different sizes in person. Carbon fibre helmets like the XR7 are made-to-order, and not held in regular stock due to their specialised nature. However, we are expanding our R7 display range with more models in both black and white arriving soon across a wider selection of sizes. If you’re interested in the XR7, we’re happy to guide you through the sizing process in-store using the standard R7 shell as a fitment reference before placing a special order.
R7 or XR7? Choosing the Right Helmet
If you want the latest Bell helmet with the newest safety approval and solid value, the standard R7 is the right choice. It keeps weight and cost balanced while offering updated aerodynamics and all the core features you need for track and race use.
If you want the lightest possible setup for long stints or competitive driving, the XR7’s carbon shell gives you that edge. It’s the premium option designed with advanced comfort and performance in mind.
