Customer Question: Can I Use A HANS Device With Normal Seatbelts?

This one comes over the counter and down the phone all the time, and it came in again last week. The customer does a handful of track days a year in the car they also drive to work, a friend is selling a barely used HANS, and they wanted to know if it would work with standard seatbelts before any money changed hands.
Asking first saved them a few hundred pounds, because a HANS cannot do its job with a standard three point belt. The reason is mechanical, and once you see it the whole subject untangles, including the one device that genuinely is built for this exact situation.

How a HANS holds on, and why the belt decides everything
Sit a HANS on your shoulders with nothing over it and it is a loose collar with two legs resting down your chest. It starts working the moment a harness is pulled tight over it. The shoulder straps run across those legs, the buckle loads them, and the device is clamped between the webbing and your body. Short tethers connect it to posts on the helmet shell, so your helmeted head and your torso now move as one piece.
A standard three point belt gives the device none of that. The diagonal strap crosses one leg at best, and because the inertia reel pays out webbing whenever you lean, even that strap holds nothing still. The device just rides around on your shoulders with the helmet tethered to it. If you want to feel this for yourself, call in and Cameron will sit one on your shoulders without a harness over it. The Hybrid part of the answer
The line you will have read on the forums is that a Simpson Hybrid works with normal belts, and it is half right. Hybrid devices strap to your torso with their own harness, so they stay put without a competition belt over them.
Half right, because the family split matters. The Simpson Hybrid S is the one device Simpson has tested and sells for use with a standard three point belt. The Hybrid Sport, Hybrid Endurance and Hybrid Pro Lite we keep on the shelf are harness devices, doing the same job as a HANS in a different way: they sit on the back and shoulders with nothing over the collarbones, and you can climb out of the car still wearing one, which is why endurance and rally crews rate them.
So the device that answers this customer's question is the Hybrid S, and it deserves a proper look.

The Simpson Hybrid S up close
Simpson’s own wording is that the Hybrid S is “the only Frontal Head Restraint proven effective for 3-point harnesses”. It carries the same FIA 8858-2010 homologation as every yoke device on this page, plus SFI 38.1, and Simpson developed it with the Detroit car manufacturers, whose test engineers and driving instructors spend their working lives belted into standard three point seats. Simpson report a big drop in neck tension in their FMVSS208 testing against a helmet worn with a three point belt alone.
The way it works is visible in the photos. The carbon shell sits low on your back and shoulders, its own straps buckle across the front of your chest, and the helmet tethers to it exactly as it would to a HANS. Your belt is no longer being asked to hold the device, because the device is already wearing you. There is no tall back plate to catch on the door or the cage on the way out, and the anchor rings at the bottom take the lap belt of a harness, so the same device is approved for 2 inch and 3 inch competition harnesses if the car gets belts later. It is the one purchase on this page that works on both sides of the fence.
Fitment notes from the spec sheet: standard post clips or Simpson’s M61 quick release tethers on the helmet end, and Simpson offer custom sizing and a women’s cut to order. Helmet posts and clips
Whichever route you take, the helmet joins in. Every current FIA approved helmet has provision for FHR posts, and the posts and clips have to match both the helmet’s homologation and the device’s tethers. These Simpson clips suit helmets homologated to FIA 8858-2010, FIA 8860-2010 and Snell SA2010 or SA2015. Other combinations need other hardware, and this is the bit people get wrong buying online.

Questions that come with this one
Do I need an FHR for a track day at all?
Usually the organiser asks for a helmet and covered arms and stops there, but every operator writes its own rules, and where a device is required it will say so in the event regs. Send us the event and we will read them with you.
Which angle and size do I need?

Is a second hand HANS worth buying?
Sometimes. The label carries the model, size, homologation and date of manufacture, so we can tell you exactly what is being sold. Send us photos of the label before money changes hands and we will give you a straight answer.
Can I fit a harness and keep the standard belts for the road?
Yes, plenty of track day cars run both, the harness for circuit days and the standard belt for the commute. The mounting has to be done properly and the seat has a say in it, so tell us the car and seat and we will go through it.
