A Complete FIA Legal Kit For The Lowest We Can Do It

OMP Sport suit | Sparco Stealth RF | Full FIA budget basket

Someone called last week asking for the cheapest full FIA kit to enter a club racing championship. Not what we recommend, not what most people buy: the actual compliant minimum, priced out item by item, with a current FIA approval on each one. The answer is £986.40. This guide shows exactly what that figure is made of and where it goes.

We checked every FIA-approved product in each category against live stock before writing this. Nothing in the basket is borderline: every item carries the current FIA standard for its category. The prices are what you would pay today, not what was on the website six months ago.

  • Total for a complete FIA-compliant kit at GSM Performance: £986.40.
  • The suit (£333.60) and helmet (£404.40) together account for 74.8% of the total.
  • The suit alone costs more than all other items in the basket combined, excluding the helmet.
  • FIA 8859-2024 is the current car racing helmet standard. The Sparco Stealth RF is the cheapest option at this standard.
  • Adding full FIA underwear (Sparco RW-4 top and long johns) brings the total to £1,130.40.

All items verified instock at GSM Performance, 21 October 2026. Prices inc VAT. Every item in the basket holds the current FIA approval for its category. Prices shown are the cheapest FIA-compliant option in each category at the time of writing.

Every item in the table was checked against live stock before this guide went up. We also pulled every cheaper alternative in each category and checked whether it held an FIA approval. Those that did not are not in the basket. The OMP Proban suit is SFI-rated but carries no FIA homologation. The OMP OS10 boots are the same. The OMP New Rally Gloves carry ISO 6940 fire resistance but are not FIA-approved. Those products cost less and are excluded for that reason.

Where the money goes

The suit and the helmet together account for £738 of the £986.40. That is 74.8 per cent of the total before you have bought anything else. The remaining four items, boots, gloves, balaclava and socks, add up to £248.40 combined.

Garreth’s observation on this: the suit costs more than those four items put together. The OMP Sport Race Suit at £333.60 exceeds the total of the Sparco Slalom shoes (£108), the OMP Sport gloves (£78), the OMP First balaclava (£37.20) and the OMP First socks (£25.20), which come to £248.40. That is where the money goes in a compliant kit. Most of it goes before you buy footwear.

This is not a feature of our stock or our pricing. It is a feature of what FIA-approved suits cost to make. Single-layer FIA 8856-2018 suits require specific Nomex construction and must pass independent fire testing. There is a floor on what they can cost, and the OMP Sport is close to that floor.

The suit: why the floor is where it is

The OMP Sport Race Suit at £333.60 is the cheapest FIA 8856-2018 race suit we stock. Below this price point, the suits we carry either hold no FIA approval or carry SFI ratings only. For most UK club racing regulations that specify an FIA standard, SFI does not count as a substitute. If your series requires FIA 8856-2018 or later, SFI is a different certification from a different body and will not be accepted.

Garreth’s position on the OMP Sport is that it is not a compromise kit. It is a single-layer suit holding the current FIA standard, and it is the same approval as the suits that cost three times as much. The difference between a £333.60 FIA suit and a £900 FIA suit is construction quality, lining materials and comfort over a long race day. The fire protection approval is the same on both.

One thing to check before ordering: suit sizing across brands runs differently. Cameron can confirm the right size for a given chest, waist and height measurement before the order goes out. A suit that fits badly is uncomfortable to wear for a full race session regardless of what it cost.

The helmet: the biggest line item

The Sparco Stealth RF at £404.40 is the cheapest FIA 8859-2024 helmet we stock. It is also the single largest item in the basket, costing more than the suit.

FIA 8859-2024 is the current motorcycle and car racing helmet standard, introduced in 2025. Helmets carrying FIA 8859-2015 approval remain legal under most UK club regulations, but that standard was superseded and new helmets sold in 2026 should carry the current one. The Sparco Stealth RF carries FIA 8859-2024. There is nothing outdated in this basket.

Garreth’s view: the helmet is not a category where you should be trying to spend less than the basket figure. Below the Sparco Stealth RF price, the helmets we stock carry CIK/FIA karting approval, not the car racing standard. Those are not the same thing and will not be accepted at circuit racing scrutineering. The helmet in this basket is the floor for circuit racing, not an optional premium.

Cameron checks head circumference before a helmet order goes out. Helmet sizing varies between manufacturers and an incorrectly-sized helmet does not meet the safety objective it was built for. This applies at every price point.

FIA 8859-2024 and FIA 8859-2015: what the difference means in practiceFIA 8859-2015 helmets are still accepted by most UK club racing series that specify an FIA helmet standard. However, the 8859-2015 approval has a finite validity period based on manufacture date, typically ten years. A helmet made in 2016 holding 8859-2015 approval was already outside its ten-year window in 2026. Buying a new helmet with 8859-2024 approval gives you the current standard from the date of manufacture, with no countdown to worry about. Check your specific series regulations to confirm which standard they accept.

Everything else: £248.40 for four items

The Sparco Slalom at £108 are the cheapest FIA 8856-2018 racing footwear we stock. They are low-cut racing shoes, not the high-ankle boot style you see on some drivers. Some series regulations specify high boots; check yours before ordering. For most club racing series the Sparco Slalom will pass scrutineering on approval, but ankle coverage requirements vary.

The OMP Sport Race Gloves at £78 are the cheapest FIA 8856-2018 race gloves in the store. Gloves are one of the categories where fit matters more than most people expect. Cameron’s approach is to check hand length and width before recommending a size, as a glove that bunches at the palm affects steering feel at a level that is noticeable after a few laps.

The OMP First balaclava at £37.20 and OMP First socks at £25.20 are both the cheapest FIA 8856-2018 items in their respective categories. Neither involves a quality trade-off at this price. The balaclava does what a balaclava needs to do. The socks are the same. At these price points Garreth’s view is that there is no meaningful reason to spend more unless you have a specific preference.

Underwear: minimum and optional upgrade

The OMP First Calf Length Socks at £25.20 are the minimum FIA 8856-2018 underwear item in this basket. Most UK club racing series that specify FIA underwear do so for full underwear sets, tops and bottoms, not socks only. Check your series regulations: some series require FIA-approved underwear, some do not.

If your series requires a full FIA underwear set, the cheapest option at GSM is the Sparco RW-4 Long Sleeve Top at £75.60 and the Sparco RW-4 Long Johns at £68.40. Both hold FIA 8856-2018 approval. Adding those two items brings the total to £1,130.40.

Garreth’s view on FIA underwear where it is not mandated: it is worth having. A FIA-approved suit over a cotton t-shirt and jeans is a real reduction in protection compared to the same suit over FIA-approved underwear. The suit homologation is tested with appropriate undergarments. For anyone racing regularly, the additional £144 for a full underwear set is not a luxury item.

The affordable balaclavas guide on this site goes through the full FIA balaclava range, open face and full face included, with live prices and the approval on each product. The entry-level ranges guide covers why the OMP First and Sparco entry ranges outsell the cheaper alternatives and what the sales data from this year shows.

For most UK club racing series: FIA 8856-2018 for the suit, gloves, boots and balaclava; FIA 8859-2024 or FIA 8859-2015 for the helmet. Some series also require FIA 8856-2018 underwear (tops and bottoms). Check your specific series regulations before ordering, as requirements vary by series and class. Cameron can confirm what your regulations require before the order goes out.

It depends on your series. Some UK club racing championships specify FIA 8856-2018 underwear as a requirement; others do not. The minimum FIA 8856-2018 underwear item in this basket is the OMP First Calf Length Socks at £25.20. A full underwear set (FIA top and long johns) adds £144 to the basket total. Check your series regulations directly or call us and we will look them up with you.

The Sparco Stealth RF at £404.40 carries FIA 8859-2024, the current car and motorcycle racing helmet standard. Helmets at a lower price point in our stock carry CIK/FIA karting approval, which is a different standard and will not pass scrutineering at circuit racing events. The helmet is the most expensive single item in a compliant circuit racing kit at every price point we have seen.

FIA 8859-2015 helmets are accepted by most UK club racing series that specify an FIA helmet standard, so yes. However, 8859-2015 approval has a validity period based on manufacture date, typically ten years. A new helmet in 2026 should carry 8859-2024. A second-hand 8859-2015 helmet may be outside its validity window depending on when it was made. Call us and we can advise on what is in stock at the time and whether it fits your regulations.

If you want to confirm what your series requires before ordering, or check whether a specific item fits your regulations, give us a call on 0115 647 8650. Cameron can go through your series rulebook before the order goes out.
