Seats / Recaro fitting

Can your Recaro seat move to another car?

The badge can. The mounting system may not. Start by identifying whether the seat is a Recaro aftermarket model or an OEM seat built for the donor vehicle, then inspect everything underneath it.

Do not order from three measurements alone

The old guide published one set of Recaro bolt centres and said a matching seat should accept an aftermarket frame. That is not a safe compatibility test. The mounting face, thread, runner, buckle and electronics also have to agree.

01 / Identity

OEM Recaro and aftermarket Recaro are different jobs

Find the part number before looking for a frame.

01OEM Recaro

Made for a named vehicle programme. The lower frame, runners, airbags and connectors may be unique to that car even when the upper seat resembles another Recaro.

Custom fit likely

02Aftermarket Recaro

Sold as a Recaro product with published mounting equipment. A listed baseframe or side-mount arrangement may exist for the recipient car.

Use the part number

A headrest logo is not identification. Look under the cushion and shell for the manufacturer label, build number and homologation label where applicable. Send those before buying parts.

02 / Dimensions

Measure the seat as an assembly

Photograph the tape in every measurement.

1

Remove loose trim only

Expose the intended mounting face without cutting upholstery or opening an airbag module.

2

Map every mounting point

Record side-to-side and front-to-back centres, thread size, surface height and whether captive nuts are present.

3

Measure the runners

Check outside width, travel, locking points and handle. Confirm whether the buckle is attached to the runner or seat frame.

4

Measure the recipient car

Record original floor points, tunnel and sill clearance, steering centreline and available height.

A flat drawing can hide a height problem

An adaptor can line up four holes and still leave the seat too high or off-centre. Build the final driving position into the design before metal is cut.

03 / Original equipment

Electronics and belts can stop the swap

Treat every connector as safety-related until identified.

ItemDonor-seat questionRecipient-car question
Side airbagIs one fitted and which control system fires it?Will removing the original airbag create an SRS fault or reduce protection?
Occupancy sensorIs the mat built into the cushion?Does the passenger restraint system expect a different signal?
Belt buckleIs it fixed to the runner, frame or floor?Which buckle and pretensioner must remain with the car?
Heating or motorsWhat voltage, modules and position feedback are used? Can they be supported without altering safety circuits?
Position sensorDoes the airbag system use seat position? Will the control unit log a fault if it is missing?

Use wiring diagrams and repair information for both cars. A connector that physically fits can carry a different signal. If the swap changes an airbag, pretensioner or occupancy circuit, use a competent automotive electrician or installer.

04 / Structure

Plan the adaptor around the loads

The neatest bracket is not automatically the strongest one.

A defensible plan has

  • Known seat and vehicle mounting points
  • Suitable material and fastener specifications
  • Clear belt-buckle load path
  • Runner locks working together
  • Clearance through full travel

Reject a plan that relies on

  • Elongated holes with no maker approval
  • Thin flat strips spanning large gaps
  • Bolts pulled sideways to close misalignment
  • A buckle moved to an unverified tab
  • Welds or drilling by an unqualified fitter

Garreth and Cameron can help identify the retail parts and whether a known frame exists. A custom structural adaptor belongs with a competent vehicle fabricator, who can see the car and accept responsibility for the design.

05 / Questions

Common questions

Can a factory Recaro seat go into another car?

Sometimes, but it is normally a custom installation. A Recaro seat made for an Astra VXR, Lotus, Ford or another manufacturer may have model-specific rails, electronics and belt equipment rather than the aftermarket Recaro pattern.

Do all Recaro seats use a 405 mm bolt pattern?

No. Do not use one internet measurement as a Recaro standard. Record every usable threaded point on the actual seat, including front-to-back spacing and whether the surface is flat.

Can I buy a Recaro frame and drill it to match?

A new vehicle frame and an OEM Recaro seat are two separate systems. Do not drill safety hardware by default. The frame maker or a competent fabricator must approve or design the adaptor and its fasteners.

What happens to the seat airbag?

The donor seat may contain a side airbag, occupancy sensor, heater, position sensor or pretensioner. Wiring and control-unit compatibility need the repair information for both vehicles. Do not connect components by wire colour.

Can the original belt buckle move with the seat?

Only if its mounting, pretensioner, wiring and geometry are suitable in the recipient car. Often the recipient buckle and its approved mounting arrangement need to remain.

Will the donor runners fit the new floor?

Usually not without a purpose-made interface. Check runner width, lock operation, handle clearance, floor height and structural mounting points before deciding what can be retained.

Is transferring an aftermarket Recaro easier?

Often. A genuine aftermarket seat may match a published Recaro baseframe or side-mount system. Confirm the seat part number, because trim badges and model nicknames are not enough.

What should I send GSM?

Photograph the seat label, underside, runners, buckle and every connector. Add the donor and recipient vehicle details plus measurements between the mounting points.

Before you buy a frame

Identify the seat

Send the part label, underside, runners, buckle, connectors and both vehicle details. We will tell you whether a listed system exists or the job needs fabrication.
