The Best Coilovers For Your Nissan GT-R R35
Suspension guide
A GT-R owner asking about coilovers usually wants one of two things: the car sitting properly, with the arch gap gone and the ride sorted, or a car that can do a trackday without the damping giving up halfway through the session.
Cameron's first observation is about the numbers. This is a heavy car with four wheel drive, it already sits low, and every kit we list for it runs stiff springs and a small recommended drop. Garreth's is about the range, which runs from about eleven hundred pounds for a BC Racing kit to nearly seven thousand for a MOTON 3-way.
Here is what we would fit at each level, and why.
- Three brands list R35 coilovers with us: BC Racing, TEIN and MOTON
- BC Racing ships the R35 at 12 kg/mm front and 10 rear
- TEIN MONO SPORT runs 16 front and 9 rear, among the stiffest in its range
- TEIN recommends lowering by only 10 to 30mm
- Every kit listed covers the R35 from 2007 on

A heavy car that is already low
The R35 is not a car that needs slamming. It sits low from the factory, it is heavy, and it puts its power down through all four wheels, and the kits we list reflect all three.
| Kit | Front spring | Rear spring | Recommended drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| BC Racing R35 | 12 kg/mm | 10 kg/mm | Height adjusts independently of preload |
| TEIN MONO SPORT GSK00-71SS3 | 16 kgf/mm | 9 kgf/mm | 10 to 30mm, TEIN reference 20mm |
| MOTON 1, 2 and 3-way | Springs included | Custom setup available | Height adjustable |
From our listings. TEIN's 16 front is the joint stiffest front spring in its MONO SPORT range.
Cameron’s point is that the small recommended drop is the one to take seriously. Lower a GT-R too far and you run out of travel on a car that needs it, and it will not look much better for it.
On coverage, we checked the whole catalogue. AST, Bilstein and Eibach do not list an R35 kit with us, but the three brands that do cover road cars and race cars alike, and between them there is a kit at every level from the entry coilover to a 3-way.

1. BC Racing BR: the entry point
BR gives the GT-R height adjustment and 30 clicks of rebound on rubber top mounts front and rear, which keeps the noise down on a road car. BC ships it on 12 kg/mm front and 10 rear springs. The dampers can be rebuilt, and the same listing takes you to the ER series later.
Garreth’s view is that this is the kit for a road GT-R that wants the stance and a firmer, better controlled ride, without spending more than it needs to.
- Price. £1,139 inc VAT, BR
- Adjustment. Height, 30 click damping
- In the box. Coilovers with springs; the top mount options are on the listing
- Buy it if. It is a road car and you want it sitting right on a sensible budget

2. TEIN MONO SPORT: the UK-market road and trackday kit
MONO SPORT is TEIN’s monotube kit, written for the UK-market R35, full-length adjustable so the height changes without touching stroke or preload, with 16 damping positions and TEIN’s ADVANCE M.S.V. valving for a wider range between soft and firm.
Cameron likes it for the setup data. TEIN gives the recommended drop, the maximum range and a reference height for the car. That takes the guesswork out of the first fit.
- Price. £1,860 inc VAT
- Adjustment. Full-length height, 16 positions with ADVANCE M.S.V.
- In the box. Monotube coilovers, springs, upper mounts per car
- Buy it if. You want a road car that also does trackdays, set up from TEIN’s own figures
3. BC Racing ER: the budget 2-way
The same BC listing, with a second dial and external reservoirs: rebound and compression adjust separately, which is what lets you tune a car session to session, and it costs a fraction of the MOTON 2-Way.
Cameron’s view is that ER is the cheapest way onto a two dial setup on a GT-R, and a good way to learn what compression adjustment does before spending serious money.
- Price. £1,899 inc VAT, ER
- Adjustment. Height, rebound and compression separately
- In the box. Coilovers with external reservoirs and springs
- Buy it if. You want compression adjustment and your budget is nearer two thousand than six
4. MOTON 1-Way Clubracer: the trackday GT-R
The MOTON 1-Way is a non-inverted monotube with 15 clicks of rebound, built in the Netherlands by AST. There is no reservoir to find space for and no hose to route, and the kit includes camber-adjustable front and solid rear top mounts with a coilover at every corner.
Garreth would point a GT-R that does regular trackdays here before the 2-way, because it is the MOTON damper without the plumbing, and for many owners one dial is enough.
- Price. £4,752 inc VAT
- Adjustment. Height, 15 click rebound
- In the box. Coilovers front and rear, no reservoir
- Buy it if. The car goes on track regularly and you want the MOTON damper without reservoirs
5. MOTON 2-Way: rebound and compression, properly
The 2-Way adds compression on a remote reservoir, 15 clicks of each, with MOTON’s blow off valve system in the reservoir for kerbs and rough surfaces. It is the damper MOTON built its reputation on. The reservoirs sit on hoses, so they can go wherever the GT-R has room.
Cameron’s rule for this rung: buy it when somebody is going to change the settings between sessions and keep a note of what happened.
- Price. £6,168 inc VAT
- Adjustment. Height, 15 click rebound and 15 click compression
- In the box. Springs, remote reservoirs, top mounts where applicable
- Buy it if. You set the car up at the circuit and want both adjusters
6. MOTON 3-Way: the flagship
The 3-Way splits compression into 15 high speed and 6 low speed positions, on top of 15 clicks of rebound. A MOTON triple adjustable won the European Touring Car Championship in 2004. It is built for cars that are driven hard for long stints.
Garreth’s view is that on a GT-R this is a race car part, and if that is what the car is, it is the one to have.
- Price. £6,948 inc VAT
- Adjustment. Height, rebound, 15 high speed and 6 low speed compression
- In the box. Springs, remote reservoirs, top mounts where applicable
- Buy it if. It is a race car, or a trackday car with somebody setting it up properly

Common questions
What are the best coilovers for a GT-R on a budget?
BC Racing BR, at a little over a thousand pounds, with height and 30 click damping adjustment and springs chosen for the car.
How low should I go on an R35?
Not far: TEIN recommends 10 to 30mm, with 20mm as its reference setting, and the car already sits low.
Why are the springs so stiff?
The GT-R is heavy and four wheel drive, so the kits are sprung to suit: 12 and 10 kg/mm on BC Racing, 16 and 9 on TEIN.
Do you do AST or Bilstein for the R35?
No, BC Racing, TEIN and MOTON are the three brands we list for it.
Is MOTON worth the money over BC Racing?
For a race car, yes, but for a road car BC Racing or TEIN will do the job for a fraction of the price.
What we would fit
For a road GT-R, Cameron would fit the TEIN MONO SPORT, because it is the UK-market kit, TEIN gives you the settings, and the monotube damper copes with a trackday too.
Garreth’s pick depends on the budget. BC Racing BR if the car only needs to sit right; MOTON once the car is going racing. Where they agree is height: take the recommended drop, not the maximum.
Our MOTON guide goes deeper on that range, and the BC Racing Nissan guide covers every BC fitment for the brand.
Send us the registration and what the car does, and we will recommend a kit and a ride height before anything is ordered.
Send the registration and tell us whether the car is a road car, a trackday car or something more serious. We will find the right kit and talk through spring rates and ride height before anything is ordered.
