A customer rang this week with a straightforward question. He has a car, he has an entry, and he needs to be dressed legally for it without spending what a set of tyres costs. So we went through the racewear on our own shelves, read every listing, and worked out the genuinely cheapest way to arrive at scrutineering properly kitted.
The answer is £519.60 for a suit, boots and gloves, all three homologated to FIA 8856-2018. That is the number, and the rest of this page is how it breaks down, what else you still need, and the three places where the cheapest thing on our site is not actually the cheapest thing you can race in.

The cheapest is not always the cheapest
Sort our racewear by price and the first few results will not get you through scrutineering. That is not a trick, those items exist for real jobs, but if you are buying for competition it is worth knowing before you click.
The £166 suit is for mechanics
The Sparco Martini mechanics suit is the cheapest thing in our suits category. Its own listing says it carries no FIA homologation and is not intended to. It is for the people working on the car.
The £192 and £193 suits are single layer
The OMP Proban and the OMP OS10 are proper race suits and they are approved, but not to FIA 8856-2018. They belong at events that do not ask for an FIA suit.
The £69 gloves are not 8856-2018
The OMP New Rally gloves are the cheapest in our gloves category, and their own listing says plainly that they will not satisfy a class requiring FIA 8856-2018.
So the real starting line is a little higher up the list. Everything carded from here on carries FIA 8856-2018 according to its own listing, which we read individually instead of trusting a category filter.
The three cheapest FIA suits
Three suits, fifty nine pounds between the cheapest and the dearest, and all three homologated to FIA 8856-2018. At this end of the market you are buying the approval and a sensible cut, not lightweight fabric or a fancy fit.

OMP Sport, £333.60. The cheapest FIA suit we sell. Two layers of Nomex at 400 grams per square metre, with soft knitted inserts across the back for freedom of movement, in black, blue or red, sizes S to XXL. If your only requirement is a homologated suit and a sensible price, this is the one, and it is where most first time buyers land.
OMP First S, £384.00. Two layers of breathable Nomex, floating arms with elastic bellows and a knitted elastic panel across the back. Fifty pounds more than the Sport buys you a suit built to be worn for longer stints without cooking you, which matters more than it sounds by the third race of a hot day.
Sparco Sprint Advanced, £392.40. Sparco’s two layer suit at the accessible end of their competition range, and the widest choice on this page: sizes 44 to 66 continental and seven colours, including navy and white, black with fluorescent yellow, and plain black. The three cheapest FIA boots
Boots are the cheapest part of the job and the one people skip longest, usually in a pair of trainers. Fourteen pounds separates these three and all of them carry FIA 8856-2018.

Sparco Slalom, £108.00. The cheapest FIA boot we sell and the one that makes the £519.60 total work. Built to FIA 8856-2018 and SFI, with a thin sole so you can actually feel the pedals, which is the whole point of a race boot over a trainer.
OMP Sport, £116.40. Eight pounds more, and the reason to consider it is tidiness and not performance: it is the boot that matches the OMP Sport suit, so the whole set comes from one range and looks deliberate.
Sparco Slalom+, £122.40. The updated Slalom, again FIA 8856-2018 and SFI. Fourteen pounds over the standard Slalom for a newer build. If neither of the cheaper two is in your size, this is the next one along, not a step up in class.
The three cheapest FIA gloves
Barely a pound between the three cheapest, so this comes down to which pair fits your hand. All three are FIA 8856-2018, and none of them is the cheapest pair in our gloves category, which is the point made further up this page.

Sparco Land, £78.00. Certified to both FIA 8856-2018 and SFI, and the cheapest pair on our site that a scrutineer will accept. Part 001366, and the pair we counted in the £519.60.
OMP Sport, £78.00. The same money to the penny, homologated to FIA 8856-2018, and the pair that completes an all OMP Sport set alongside the suit and boots.
Sparco Land+, £79.20. One pound twenty more than the Land, approved to FIA 8856-2018 and SFI. At this margin, buy whichever fits best and do not think about the price difference at all.
Two ways to buy it
There are two sensible routes, and the gap between them is eight pounds forty. Take the cheapest of each category and you get to £519.60. Take the OMP Sport suit, boots and gloves as a matched set and you get to £528.00.

The suit is the same in both columns, because the OMP Sport is the cheapest FIA suit we sell.
Garreth’s view: spend the eight pounds forty. Not because the OMP boot is better than the Sparco one, they are both fine, but because a set from one range fits together properly and looks like you meant it. If the Sparco Slalom is the one that fits your foot, take that instead and forget the matching entirely. Fit beats tidiness every time.

A head restraint
Most UK circuit racing requires a frontal head restraint. It is not optional in those classes and it is not cheap, so find out early whether yours needs one.

Common questions
Is a cheap FIA suit less safe than an expensive one?
They are held to the same standard. FIA 8856-2018 is a pass or fail test, and a suit either carries the homologation or it does not, so the OMP Sport at £333.60 has cleared the same bar as a suit at four times the money. What the extra money buys is weight, breathability, cut, stretch panels and how comfortable the thing is to wear for an hour, which is a real difference but not a safety one.
Can I use a single layer suit instead and save £140?
Only if your event does not ask for FIA 8856-2018. The OMP OS10 and OMP Proban are genuine race suits with a real named approval, and for track days and events that do not require an FIA suit they do the job for around £192. The moment your regulations specify 8856-2018, they are not eligible and no amount of them being nearly right will help you at scrutineering. Check the regulations first, then buy.
Why are the cheapest gloves on your site not on this page?
Because they are not FIA 8856-2018. The OMP New Rally gloves at £69.00 are a good glove and their own product page says outright that they will not satisfy a class requiring 8856-2018. Nine pounds more gets you the Sparco Land, which will. We would rather point that out here than have you find out on the morning.
Do I need to match the brands?
No. Nothing in any regulation cares whether your gloves match your suit. Mixing an OMP suit with Sparco boots is an ordinary purchase and we sell plenty of them. Matching is a preference, and on these numbers it costs about eight pounds, so do it if you like the look and ignore it if you do not.
How long does delivery take?
Stock items ship quickly. Sizing is the thing that slows people down, because racewear does not map neatly onto UK high street sizes and the ranges here use different systems, S to XXL on the OMP suits and 44 to 66 continental on the Sparco. If the budget is the constraint and the entry is booked, the OMP Sport suit at £333.60, the Sparco Slalom boots at £108.00 and the Sparco Land gloves at £78.00. That is £519.60 and every item on it carries FIA 8856-2018. Nobody is going to look at you twice in the paddock and nothing on that list is a compromise on the standard.
If you would rather it looked like a set, the OMP Sport suit, boots and gloves come to £528.00. And if you are going to be in the car a lot this season, the OMP First S at £384.00 is the upgrade we would actually make, because comfort over a long day is worth more than the fifty pounds it costs.
