Build Your Own Race Suit: The Custom Configurator Is Live

New on the site

If nothing off the peg has ever quite fitted you, this one is worth two minutes of your time. We have built a configurator that lets you specify a custom OMP or Sparco race suit yourself, on the site, with the price updating as you go and a real checkout at the end.

It is live now. Eight suits, three sizing routes, and if you go the whole way, an eighteen measurement chart that goes to the factory exactly as you type it.

No quote form, no waiting for someone to ring you back with a number. Pick the suit, put your measurements in, see the price, order it.

Open the race suit configurator and have a look, or read on for how the three sizing routes differ.

  • Eight suits to choose from, five OMP and three Sparco, all FIA 8856-2018
  • Three routes: a standard size, a stock size with alterations, or full made to measure
  • The full route takes eighteen measurements on the makers own chart
  • The price updates as you build, and you can check out there and then
  • Every measurement lights up on a suit drawing as you type it, so you can see what you are giving
  • Prices start at GBP 392.40 inc VAT and run to GBP 1,566.60 for the Sparco Prime

Why this exists

Race suits are sized for an average that a lot of people are not. If you are tall with a short inside leg, short with long arms, broad across the shoulders, or just plain between two sizes, the peg size is a compromise you then live with for years.

OMP and Sparco both build their suits to order. That has always been true, and it has always been slightly awkward to buy: a phone call, a form, a wait, a price. The configurator takes the awkward part out. Everything the factory needs is on one page, and so is the price.

The eight suits

These are the suits OMP and Sparco will build to order, from a two layer club suit up to the lightest thing either of them makes. Every one carries FIA 8856-2018 and is homologated as built, so a custom suit is as valid at scrutineering as a stock one.

The prices below are the starting points, inc VAT, and the configurator reads them live from the product pages, so what you see is what the suit costs today.

Three ways to have it made

This is the part people get wrong, and it is worth understanding before you start, because the cheapest route is often the right one.

Standard sizeNo surchargeA stock size from the maker range. If a peg size genuinely fits you, take it. You gain nothing by going further, and you still get a suit built on your order.
With alterationsSmall surchargeA stock size with the legs or arms adjusted. The answer for most people who miss off the peg, and the one for shorter legs. Give a base size and the centimetres to add or take off.
Full made to measureEighteen measurementsBuilt from scratch to your own chart. Worth it when your proportions are the unusual part and not your height, or when you want it to fit the way a tailored suit does.

The surcharge for each route is shown on the page as you pick it, and it is added to the suit price in front of you, not sprung on you at checkout.

The bit we are quietly pleased with

Eighteen measurements is a lot to ask for, and a list of letters on a form is a good way to get them wrong. So the page has a drawing of the suit beside the form.

Click into any field and its line lights up green on the drawing, with your figure on it. If you are not sure whether the arm measurement runs from the shoulder or the neck, you do not have to guess, because the line is right there showing you.

The drawing as it appears on the page, with the chest and the inside leg selected. The letters match the form.

The letters are the maker own, so the chart that reaches OMP or Sparco is the chart they expect to receive. Nothing gets translated in the middle, which is where mistakes usually happen.

The details, and what happens next

The details you get to choose

Once the fit is settled there is the rest of the specification: cuffs or boot cut legs, no pockets or external or internal, a belt or no belt, your name embroidered, and a nationality flag from seventy countries.

Colours and designs are settled with us by phone after the order, from the maker palette for the suit you have picked. Sponsor logos we quote separately, so ring us with the artwork and we will price it.

What happens when you order

You check out normally, the way you would for anything else on the site. The order comes to us with your full specification attached, we check it over, and we come back to you about colours before anything is cut.

Production time is shown on the page and confirmed when we place the order with the factory. One thing to be clear about: a suit built to your measurements cannot be returned unless it is faulty, which is why the page asks you to confirm your figures before it will let you order. Measure twice.

If you are not sure, ring us firstWe would much rather spend ten minutes on the phone with you than build the wrong suit. Call 0115 989 3488 and we will go through the measurements with you, or tell you honestly that a standard size will do the job and save you the surcharge.

Build your suit and see the price

It costs nothing to spec one out.

Yes. All eight suits carry FIA 8856-2018 and are homologated as built, so a made to measure suit is as valid at scrutineering as a stock one. The approval is on the suit, not on the size.

If a stock size fits, take the standard route. If you are a normal shape but an unusual height, take the alterations route, which is the answer for most people with shorter legs. Full made to measure is for when your proportions are the problem and not your height.

That is the whole point of it. The price updates as you choose, it shows excluding and including VAT side by side, and nothing is added at checkout that you have not already seen.

You do not, ideally. Have someone else do it, in centimetres, over your underwear, and if you fall between two figures give the larger one. Each measurement lights up on the drawing as you select the field so you can see exactly where the tape goes.

Colours and designs come from the maker palette for the suit you pick and we sort those with you by phone after the order. Sponsor logos are quoted separately, so send us the artwork and we will price the printing.

A suit built to your measurements cannot be returned unless it is faulty. That is why the page makes you confirm your figures before it will let you order. If there is any doubt at all, ring us before you buy.

Have a goThe configurator is live now

Pick a suit, choose how it should fit, put your figures in and watch the price move. It costs nothing to build one and see, and if you get halfway and want a second opinion, ring us on 0115 989 3488 and Garreth or Cameron will go through it with you.

Not sure of your measurements?Ring us before you order, not after

A made to order suit cannot go back, so we would far rather spend ten minutes on the phone with you first. Garreth and Cameron will talk you through the tape, or tell you honestly that a standard size will do the job and save you the surcharge.
