The FIA permits decoration only when it follows the instructions for that exact model. Paint, solvent, adhesive, heat or careless preparation can damage the shell or liner.
A professional-looking finish is not proof of a compliant process. Ask the helmet manufacturer for written decoration guidance and give it to the decorator before work starts.
Do not remove the original coating, expose the helmet to solvents or fumes, paint the visor mechanism, or use heat above the maker limit.
The exact manufacturer instructions control the job
The FIA helmet guide says decoration must follow the helmet manufacturer’s instructions. Paint selection, preparation and sealing depend on the shell. Even fumes can damage the energy-absorbing liner.
Do not assume vinyl is harmless
Motorsport UK warns that paint, adhesives, cleaning agents and stickers can damage some moulded shells without obvious signs. A wrap can also cover cracks, labels or inspection points. Ask the manufacturer specifically about vinyl and adhesive.
Keep identification and condition open to inspection
Do not cover the FIA or Snell label, serial details, ASN sticker, air vents, hardware or damage. Never use decoration to hide a mark. Officials can reject an improperly customised helmet.
Inspect before the next event
Check the liner, chin strap, visor, FHR terminals, seals and shell. Keep the manufacturer instructions and decorator invoice. If there is solvent smell, visible damage or doubt about the method, do not use the helmet until the manufacturer has answered.

Can decoration cover an old scratch?▾
No. Leave condition visible and ask the manufacturer about damage.
