UK drag requirements change with class, vehicle performance and event. Get the current rule, then pick an accepted helmet that fits properly. Both halves of that are on this page.
A model name in an old article cannot promise scrutineering today, and an earlier version of this page carried two approvals that the helmets do not have. Send us the class, the expected ET or speed, the event and whether an FHR is required, and we will check the label on the actual helmet.
Motorsport UK Chapter 15 points competitors to the Drag Racing Yearbook, which can add requirements. Some classes use SFI or Snell wording instead, and one approval does not substitute for another.
Read Chapter 15 alongside the current Drag Racing Yearbook
Drag racing is the discipline where a general FIA answer is least likely to be the right one. Chapter 15 of the National Competition Rules sends you to the Drag Racing Yearbook, and the Yearbook can add requirements on top of the national minimum. Classes are also banded by performance, so the same car can move into a stricter bracket by getting quicker.
The other thing that catches people is that parts of the sport use American standards. SFI and Snell wording appears in class regulations, and an SFI requirement is not satisfied by an FIA helmet or the other way round. They are separate approvals from separate bodies, and a scrutineer reading for one will not accept the other.
So the order is: class regulations, then Yearbook, then helmet. Not the other way round, however tempting a sale price is in February.
Photograph the label and compare every character
A helmet can carry more than one standard, and a model can change approval between versions without changing its name. The OMP GP-R on this page is FIA 8859-2015. The Sparco Stealth RF, which looks like its direct competitor and costs a pound less, is FIA 8859-2024. Same shelf, same money, different standard.
Product copy saying FIA helmet is not evidence, and that includes ours. When we rebuilt this page we found the previous version had credited two of these helmets with Snell approvals they do not carry, taken from a manufacturer summary rather than the label. Read the label.
If you are buying used, photograph the label and the homologation number before money changes hands, and check it against the current list. Our FIA helmet standards guide has what is accepted and the one standard that expires at the end of this year.
Three affordable full-face FIA helmets, and what each one carries
All full face. At drag speeds we would not put you in an open-face helmet even where a class permits it.

The Sparco Stealth RF is the one we would buy. It is the cheapest of the three, it is on the current standard, the ventilation is genuinely good with chin and top intakes and rear exhausts, the visor has three positions and a central lock, and the lining comes out to wash. For staging in the sun and then doing it again forty minutes later, the airflow matters more than the badge.
The OMP GP-R costs a pound more and is on the older 8859-2015, which is still accepted and has no published expiry. Buy it for one reason: it has the widest size range here, XXS at 52cm through to XL at 63cm, so if the Sparco does not go small enough or large enough, this is the one that will.
The Bell GT6 Sport is the most money of the three and the reason to pay it is the eyeport, which is the wide aperture from the GT6 Pro. It is also the only one sold both with and without FHR posts, so if you genuinely do not need a restraint yet you can take a little off the price and add posts later.
The Stealth RF Carbon is the Stealth RF in carbon and is not a budget helmet, so it is here for completeness rather than as a recommendation. If your neck is telling you about it after a day of runs, that is the fix.

Face coverage and FHR provisions can both be specified
Do not assume every drag class wants the same thing, and do not assume open face is available to you because someone in the next lane is wearing one. Cockpit type, bodywork, fuel and class wording all feed into it, and the fuel one surprises people: classes running certain fuels have their own clothing and helmet provisions.
Our own position is simpler than the rulebook. Everything on this page is full face, because at the speeds involved we would not sell you anything else for the strip even where a class allows it.
On restraints, if an FHR is required then check three things: that the helmet has approved anchorages, that the posts are actually in the version you are ordering, and that the device works with your seat angle and belt route. The Bell GT6 Sport is the one to watch here, because the version without posts is a different order code.
The cheapest accepted helmet is the one that fits
There is about a pound between the two cheapest helmets here, so price is not really the deciding factor. Fit is. Try the shapes with the balaclava you actually wear and with your glasses if you wear them, fasten the strap properly, and check that the helmet moves your scalp rather than rotating on your head.
Give it ten minutes. A pressure point that is invisible in the first minute becomes the only thing you can think about while you are staged. Then check clearance in the car, roll cage and roof included.
A discounted helmet that moves on your head is not value, it is a helmet that will not do its job. Come and try all four, they are on the shelf.

What is the cheapest FIA approved helmet you sell for drag racing?▾
The Sparco Stealth RF, by about a pound over the OMP GP-R, and it is on the newer FIA 8859-2024 standard. An earlier version of this page said the GP-R was cheapest, which is no longer the case.
Will any FIA 8859 helmet pass drag scrutineering?▾
Not necessarily. The current Drag Racing Yearbook plus the class and event wording decide what is accepted, and some classes specify SFI or Snell instead.
Does drag racing always require full face?▾
Requirements vary by class and vehicle. We only recommend full face for the strip regardless, and everything on this page is full face.
Is FIA 8859-2015 too old to buy in 2026?▾
No. It is on the Motorsport UK accepted list with no published expiry. The OMP GP-R carries it and is worth buying if it is the one that fits your head.
Can GSM guarantee a helmet will pass my event?▾
We can match the label to the documents you send us. The event scrutineer makes the final eligibility decision, and nobody selling you a helmet can do that for them.
Should I buy a discounted older standard?▾
Only after checking its acceptance period, its condition, the fit and what class you are likely to be in next season. A saving on a helmet you replace in a year is not a saving.
Do these come with HANS posts?▾
The Sparco pair and the OMP GP-R include them. The Bell GT6 Sport is sold both ways, so check which version you are ordering.
