Simple hardware still needs careful cable routing
A pull cable avoids an electrical trigger circuit, which is why most club cars run one. Tight bends, poor handle access and a valve that does not travel fully will still make a sound kit useless at the moment it matters.
We see the same installation trap over and over. The bottle gets fitted where it fits, and the cable is routed afterwards around whatever is in the way. Plan the internal handle, the external handle and the cable bends before you drill a single mount.
A cable can corrode, kink, loosen or fail to move the valve through its full travel, and none of that is visible from the driving seat. Inspect the complete mechanism to the maker instructions, not just the pressure gauge.
Confirm the system, the agent and the discipline
Start with the current Motorsport UK rules and your event documents to find which standard is permitted, then match the homologation number on the bottle against the relevant FIA technical list and the manufacturer manual. Everything on this page is on FIA Technical List 16, which is the plumbed-in extinguisher list.
Rally applications frequently have provisions that do not apply to a circuit or speed car, and the reverse is true too, so do not lift a specification from a friend in a different discipline. If you are not sure whether your car needs a plumbed-in system at all, that question comes before any of this.
Do not choose on bottle volume alone. The approved discharge layout, the number of nozzles and where they point, matter more than the headline capacity, and they are set by the presentation form for that system rather than by you.
Seven mechanical systems, and the choice between them

The agent is the decision most people get told about last and should think about first. Foam knocks a fire down extremely well and costs a lot less, and the two cheapest systems here are foam. It also leaves residue everywhere it goes, and if it has been through your loom, your dashboard and your ECU, the cleanup bill can be worse than the fire was.
A clean agent leaves nothing behind. In a car with expensive electronics, a modern dash or a competition ECU, that difference is worth the extra outlay, and it is why the SST6 and SAL6 kits exist alongside the cheaper ones.
Steel or alloy is simpler: alloy is lighter and costs more. The SST7 is where we would start for a club saloon, and the SAL6 2kg alloy is the one to look at if you are chasing weight and running electronics you would rather not hose down.
Single seaters are their own problem and the FAL6 exists for it: 1.4kg in an aluminium bottle designed around the space and weight limits you actually have.
The driver and a marshal both have to be able to fire it
The internal handle goes where the driver can make a proper full pull while seated normally, harness tight and steering wheel fitted. Not a reach, not a stretch across the tunnel, not somewhere that works beautifully with the wheel removed. Test it in the actual seating position, in the car as it will be raced, wearing what you will be wearing.
The external point sits near the circuit breaker so a marshal arriving at the car finds both in the same place, and it needs the prescribed extinguisher marking so they know what they are looking at. Check the co-driver requirement separately where it applies, because a rally car has a third person who may need to reach it.
Doing this by reaching into an unfinished shell is how you end up with a handle behind a seat that has since been moved back two inches.
Avoid tight turns and incomplete valve movement
Follow the minimum bend radius and the termination method in the kit instructions. A cable that has been pulled around a tight corner adds friction, and enough friction means the valve does not reach the end of its travel, which means a partial discharge or none at all. This is the single most common fault in a mechanical installation and it is invisible until you need it.
Support the outer cable along its length, protect it from heat sources and sharp edges, and leave enough access to inspect it later. Then think ahead: trim going back in, a seat that slides, a loom added next winter. Any of those can trap or crush a cable that was routed perfectly.
Do not test it by discharging the bottle. Use the manufacturer safe commissioning procedure, which checks travel and function without emptying a system you then have to pay to refill.
The restraints and the service label need equal attention
Motorsport UK requires protected containers, metal restraints and anti-torpedo tabs. That last one is there because a bottle that comes loose in an impact is several kilos travelling at whatever speed you were doing, and it is the sort of detail a scrutineer checks precisely because it gets skipped.
Keep the label visible after installation. A bottle mounted with the label against a bulkhead means someone has to unbolt it to read the service date, and that is a conversation you will have at scrutineering rather than in the workshop.
Service through the manufacturer or its appointed agent so the homologation and the service record stay supported, and when the bottle comes back, re-check the handle travel and the cable security before you call the job finished.
