The Sparco Gulf set: you buy it for the livery, the approval is on the card

Driver in a white Sparco Gulf Replica race suit with a single blue and orange stripe down the chest, wearing navy Gulf Top race boots and navy Land race gloves, standing in a wet pit lane holding a white helmet

The Gulf racing livery reached Le Mans on the Porsche 917 and the Ford GT40 before it. Sparco has licensed it for a matched three-piece: a replica race suit, a high-top boot and two colourways of race glove. All three carry FIA 8856-2018. The suit is the reason most people are looking at this set.

At £936 inc VAT for the suit alone, the Gulf set is not bought for value. The boots at £153.60 and the gloves at £111.60 are sound, capable pieces for what they cost separately; they carry the right approval and they match the livery. For the same suit money you could build a higher-specification set from other ranges. The only question the set actually asks is whether you want to drive in these colours. If the answer is yes, everything else follows from it.

The one decision that actually needs making: which gloves. Navy Blue matches the boots and reads as dark navy throughout the set. Cream picks up the white body of the suit and gives the set a two-tone look. Both are right, and both carry the same approval.

The decision before the spec

Most race suit guides measure what each price point buys in construction terms. The Gulf set does not follow that logic. You choose it for the livery. The approval and construction are both below, and they hold up; but if you are weighing construction against price, there are better-specified options at £936 for a suit.

01

The livery is the product

The Gulf set’s white, cobalt and orange reads immediately as a 1970s Le Mans livery. Sparco has licensed the Gulf Oil branding and the set is faithful to it. Whether that matters to you is the entire buying decision for this guide.

02

The accessories versus the suit

The boots at £153.60 and the gloves at £111.60 are the Gulf-branded Sparco accessories built for this set. For that suit price, higher-specification boots and gloves exist in the Sparco range. The Gulf accessories are FIA 8856-2018 and they look right with the suit; they are not the premium tier at their individual prices.

03

One glove choice to make

Navy Blue gloves match the boots: same dark navy throughout the set. Cream gloves give a different read, picking up the white panel on the suit body. The Navy Blue is the closer match to the livery as Sparco shows it in their own photography. The Cream is the more distinctive call.

04

The approval in context

FIA 8856-2018 on all three pieces means the Gulf set meets the same approval standard as the Sparco Sprint Advanced and X-Light sets. What changes with the Gulf set is the livery, not the approval tier. A scrutineer reading the Gulf suit’s homologation card reads the same standard as every other FIA 8856-2018 suit in the paddock.

The shade of blueThe cobalt on the Sparco Gulf suit is a deep royal blue. We measured it at #3250a1 from the product photographs. That is noticeably darker and richer than the powder blue associated with the classic Gulf Oil Porsche 917 livery from Le Mans 1970. Sparco’s interpretation reads as cobalt at a glance rather than the lighter sky blue of the period photographs. Both the suit and the boots confirm the same dark shade.

The suit

The Sparco Gulf Replica Race Suit (001144GU) is FIA 8856-2018. Two-layer box quilt construction with stretch panels and pre-curved sleeves. One colourway: white body with cobalt blue and orange in the Gulf racing livery.

Ten sizes from 48 to 66 in European suit sizing. Suit sizing does not follow chest measurement the way street clothes do, and the Gulf suit runs generous in the torso. Send your chest, waist, inside leg and height if you are between sizes or proportioned away from the European standard. Approved FIA underwear is required alongside the suit in most series that specify FIA 8856-2018.

The boots

The Sparco Gulf Top Race Boots (001287GU) are FIA 8856-2018. High-top construction with padded bellows at the ankle and a fire-resistant inner lining. Navy Blue is the only colourway. Ten sizes from EU 39 (UK 5.5) to EU 48 (UK 13).

The navy on the boots reads as a dark, near-midnight shade. Our colour sample measured #25335f from the product photograph. It sits well against the cobalt of the suit’s detailing.

One data note: the Material attribute on our boots listing reads “Suede.” We have flagged that for verification. The product description does not confirm suede as the upper material and the photographs are consistent with either suede or microfibre. We will update the listing when we have a supplier answer.

The gloves

The Sparco Gulf Land Race Gloves (001368GU) carry FIA 8856-2018 and SFI 3.3/5. Six sizes from XS to XXL. Two colourways: Navy Blue and Cream.

The Navy Blue gloves match the boots: the same dark navy tone throughout the set. The Cream gloves give a different read, warm off-white with a navy accent, picking up the white panel on the suit body. Both are correct for the livery. The Navy Blue reads as the more expected match; the Cream reads as the more individual one.

Both gloves carry the same approval. The decision is only about the look.

Which colours go together

The Gulf set has one suit colourway and one boot colourway. There is no permutation table here. The matching question is simpler: Navy Blue gloves or Cream gloves.

Navy Blue (#3a3f52 from the product photography) matches the boot’s navy (#25335f) and reads as a unified dark scheme across boots and gloves. Cream (#e0ddd6 body, #343d5c accent) picks up the white of the suit body and the navy appears on the accent alone.

The chips below are sampled from our product photographs.

Navy Blue#3a3f52
Matches the boot navy (#25335f)

Dark navy throughout. Reads as one colour across boots and gloves.

Cream#e0ddd6 / #343d5c
Picks up the suit’s white body (#f6f6fb)

Warm off-white with a navy accent. Two-tone read against the suit.

Hexes sampled from the real variation photographs.

The Gulf colourway, shown

One colourway on the suit and boots. The two glove options are shown below alongside the suit photographs. The choice is colour only; the approval and construction are the same on both.

Gulf. The suit and boots come in this colourway only. Gloves: Navy Blue runs dark navy throughout and matches the boots. Cream introduces warm off-white against navy and reads against the suit’s white body. Both are correct.

What else sits at this money

The Gulf suit at £936 sits above the Sparco X-Light (£841.20 inc VAT, guide 7) and well above the Sparco Sprint Advanced (guide 2). Both of those are performance-spec suits bought for construction and colour choice, not for a specific livery. Neither offers the Gulf branding.

If you are comparing on specification alone and the livery is secondary, the X-Light covers more colourways and carries a higher specification in materials for less money on the suit. The Sprint Advanced covers the entry point for FIA 8856-2018 at a price that leaves budget for higher-spec accessories. Both guides are linked below.

If the Gulf livery is why you are here, neither of those is the right comparison.

What I’d actually buy

The Gulf set is the one I’d choose for one specific reason: to drive in this livery. If I were measuring it against the X-Light on construction, the X-Light is the better-specified suit for the money. At £936 for a suit, you are paying for the licensed Gulf branding and the colourway, and if that is what you want, the set is the correct purchase.

On the gloves: I would take Cream. The Navy Blue is the obvious match and it looks right. The Cream gives the set a read most people at the circuit are not running, and it still works with the suit’s white body.

Final thoughts

The boots and gloves are capable pieces, not flagship ones. They carry FIA 8856-2018 and SFI 3.3/5 on the gloves, and they will clear scrutineering at any circuit that specifies that standard. The suit is what you are buying; the accessories complete the livery.

The only thing to confirm before ordering is which gloves. It is a real difference in how the set reads, and it is the only choice the set actually offers.
