Stand21 Carbon Featherlite HANS Devices Arrive In-store For Our Customer
Customer order, March 2025
A customer's order for the Stand21 Featherlite came in this week, and before it went out we set it on the HANS shelf in the showroom to photograph it next to the rest of the range. It is Stand21's carbon fibre FHR device, and it stands out immediately beside the composite models.
Stand21 quotes a weight from 310 grams for the Featherlite, which makes it one of the lightest FHR devices you can buy. Here is what it is, how it compares with a composite device, and what else we keep on the shelf to try.
- Stand21's carbon fibre FHR device, in the showroom for a customer order
- Weight from 310 grams, not including accessories
- Available at 20 or 30 degrees
- Medium (38 to 45.5 cm neck) and large (over 45.5 cm)
- FIA 8858-2010 and SFI 38.1 certified

What is on this page
What the Featherlite is
The Featherlite is built from high strength carbon composite, with a reshaped leg design that sits on the shoulders and a new belt loop. Stand21 has also curved the collar so it interferes less with the seat's headrest when you are wearing a helmet, which is a common complaint with bulkier devices in a tight seat.
It comes at 20 or 30 degrees, in medium for a 38 to 45.5 cm neck and large for over 45.5 cm, and it is supplied with black pads, a sliding tether and a protective bag. It is certified to FIA 8858-2010 and SFI 38.1.

Carbon or composite
The FIA approval is the same standard whether a device is carbon or composite, so the protection it is certified to is the same. What carbon buys is weight. At from 310 grams, the Featherlite is less than half the weight of a typical composite club device, and that difference is felt on the shoulders over a long race or a full rally day.
The trade-off is price. For most club drivers a composite device such as the Stand21 Club Series 3 does the job well. Garreth’s advice is to go carbon when you race long stints or simply want the lightest kit, and to make the fit and the angle the first priority either way.
The angle matters as much as the material. A 20 degree device suits the upright position of most saloon and rally cars, and 30 degrees suits a more reclined seat. Pick the angle to match how you sit in your car, not the one your friend uses. Our guide on which HANS device you need explains how to choose.

Devices on our showroom shelf
Alongside Stand21’s range, we keep several FHR devices on display so you can try them with your own helmet: the Simpson Hybrid Sport, the Stand21 Club Series 3 and Club Series 1, and the Schroth Super Sport XLT. Trying them in a seat, with the belts where they sit in the car, tells you far more than a size chart.
