Our Walero Range Is Updated: Temperature Regulating Race Underwear, Now In Sets
Racewear news, June 2021
We have given our Walero pages a proper overhaul this month. Every piece now has a fuller description of what it does, the prices have been updated, and you can build a full set from one page instead of hunting through three.
Walero is the base layer people ask for by name, usually after a hot endurance race in a closed car. So alongside the update, here is what makes it different from a standard fire retardant base layer, and who we think it suits.
- Our Walero pages now have fuller descriptions and updated prices
- The top, long johns and balaclava can be bought as a set from one page
- Walero base layers use Outlast, a temperature regulating fabric
- Walero say it cuts sweating by up to 40% and heart rate by up to 8%
- Our Walero stock is approved to FIA 8856-2000 and SFI 3.3
- Two colours: Cool Grey and Petroleum

What is on this page
What has changed on our site
The main change is sets. Pick the Walero top and the page now offers the long johns and balaclava beside it, in your size and colour, so a full set goes in the basket in one go. Each listing also now says what the garment is approved to and what the fabric actually does, which the old pages did not.
The prices have been updated at the same time, so check the listings below for today’s figures.
What makes Walero different
Every approved base layer is there to buy you time in a fire. Walero does that job like the rest, and adds a second one: managing heat on a normal day, when there is no fire and you are simply cooking inside a three layer suit.
It does that with Outlast, a fabric Walero describe as NASA developed. The fibres hold a material that soaks up heat as your skin warms and gives it back as you cool, so the layer next to you swings less. Walero say it helps hold you near 37°C, and quote up to 40% less sweat and a heart rate up to 8% lower than in a standard base layer.
Those are Walero’s figures, and we have not tested them ourselves. The idea behind them is sound, though: less heat and less sweat inside the suit means less fatigue by the end of a long stint.
The pieces, and the approvals
We stock the long sleeve top, the long johns and the open face balaclava, each in Cool Grey or Petroleum. All three are approved to FIA 8856-2000 and SFI 3.3, and the seams are flatlock, so nothing presses into you under the suit.
Approval belongs to the garment, so check what your championship asks for before you race, and read the label on each piece. Garreth’s rule is simple: if the regulations call for FIA underwear, every layer you wear needs its own label.

Who it suits
Walero costs more than a standard FIA base layer. For a short sprint, a hillclimb or a track day, a good standard set does the job. For a long stint in a closed car in summer, or a hot rally stage, the heat is what wears you down, and that is where Walero earns its price.
Wash it to the label like any fire retardant layer. Walero give a two year limited warranty from the date of purchase.
Common questions
Can I buy the Walero pieces separately?
Yes. The set option is there to save time, and every piece can still be bought on its own.
How does Walero keep you cool?
It uses Outlast fabric, which absorbs heat as you warm up and releases it as you cool down. Walero say it cuts sweating by up to 40%.
Is Walero FIA approved?
Our Walero top, long johns and balaclava are approved to FIA 8856-2000 and SFI 3.3.
What colours does Walero come in?
Cool Grey and Petroleum.
It covers the most skin, so it is where you will feel the difference first. If it works for you, add the long johns.
A summer endurance round and a ten minute sprint want different things from a base layer. We will tell you honestly whether Walero earns its price for your events.
