Zamp Switch Intercom And Drink System Explained
Helmet feature, April 2023
The Zamp Switch helmets have a clever way of adding kit. The side sections can be swapped for Zamp accessories, such as communication and a drink system, so one helmet can be set up for different kinds of racing without sending it away to be modified.
Here is how the Switch system works, what can be fitted, and the Zamp helmets and visors we have in the showroom this spring.
- Zamp Switch helmets take swap-in comms and hydration parts
- Parts fit in place of the side caps, held by three screws
- Channels in the chin bar route the mic and drink tube
- RZ-70E Switch: approved to FIA 8859-2015 and Snell SA2020
- Zamp Z-20 visors: 3 mm, tear-off posts, anti-fog coating
- Zamp RZ-35E Switch helmets on display in three colours

How the Switch system works
On a Zamp Switch helmet, the triangular caps on each side of the shell can be taken off and replaced with a different part. To change one, you remove the cheek pad and three screws on the inside of the helmet, swap the cap and refit. The standard cap is an aero cap; a communication cap can go on either side instead.
The chin bar liner has channels moulded into it, so a boom mic and a drink tube can be routed neatly through the helmet. That means the same helmet can go from a sprint with no comms to an endurance race with radio and a drink system, and back again.
Communication and hydration
A full Zamp communication kit includes a boom mic, a 3.5 mm stereo jack, a 4C Nexus plug and a coiled cord that leaves the helmet through the communication cap. The hydration kit fits in the same way, with the drink tube running through the side of the helmet.
One thing to know: some Zamp Switch accessories may only be sold in the American market, so check with us before you plan a setup around a particular part.

Zamp helmets in the showroom
We have Zamp RZ-35E Switch helmets on display in three colours, so you can see them and try them on, with a good spread of sizes ready to go out or be collected. At the time of writing there is also a limited-time code, ZAMP-10, for 10% off a Zamp helmet at the checkout.
The Zamp RZ-70E Switch is on our displays too, in red and blue, with sizes S to L in the showroom. It is approved to FIA 8859-2015 and Snell SA2020 and has Zamp’s DDAIR system, a dual-density liner with air channels all the way around the head, so cool air comes in and warm air goes out. We like what Zamp has done with the designs and colours on these Switch helmets.
Garreth’s advice is to try a helmet on before you buy, because every brand’s shell fits a slightly different head shape. Our guide to measuring for a helmet explains how to get the size right.
Zamp Z-20 visors
We have also updated our Zamp visors, which now come in more colours: smoke shades as well as bolder amber and silver mirror options. The Z-20 series shields fit all Zamp RZ series helmets. They are 3 mm thick, have posts for tear-offs and come with an anti-fog coating.
