Alpinestars Race V3 Balaclavas On Display
Racewear news, October 2023
The Alpinestars Race V3 balaclava is now on display in the showroom in both of its colours, anthracite and light grey. We have both colours here, ready to send out or collect.
A balaclava is the layer between your head and your helmet, and it is a small item that matters in a fire. The Race V3 is FIA approved, so it suits every kind of motorsport event that asks for fire resistant underwear.

What is on display
Both colours of the Race V3 are on the glass display in the showroom: a dark anthracite and a light grey. The version on display is one size, with neat stitching, a single large opening for the eyes and a hole at the mouth for a drinks tube.
The balaclava is approved to FIA 8856-2018, the standard for fire resistant underwear, so it can be worn in any motorsport event that requires it. Our guide to whether fire resistant underwear is mandatory explains where the rules ask for it.
How the Race V3 is made
Alpinestars re-engineered the Race V3 for the 2020 season. It is made from Lenzing FR fibres, which are flame resistant and breathable, so it stays comfortable under a helmet for a long session.
The seams are flat and the fit is relaxed, which helps with comfort and fatigue, and the fabric over the face area is a twin layer for extra protection where it is needed most.

Wearing and caring for it
A balaclava should sit flat under the helmet with the neck tucked into your suit collar, so there is no gap for heat to get in. Garreth's advice is to try your helmet on with the balaclava on, because it takes up a little room inside the helmet.
Wash it as the label says, and keep it away from fabric softener, which can affect fire resistant fabrics. Our racewear care guide has more.

Other balaclavas we stock
The Race V3 sits in a wider range of balaclavas from Alpinestars, Sparco and OMP. Alongside it on the display are other Alpinestars pieces, including the new Tech 1 Start V3 race gloves, which have a redesigned palm grip and FIA 8856-2018 approval.
