The New HANS IV Device Is In The Showroom To Try
Safety news, June 2025
The HANS IV has arrived in the showroom, and we have it in all three sizes so you can try one on before you buy. With a head and neck restraint, fit matters as much as the approval, so being able to sit in a seat with the device on your shoulders makes the choice much easier.
Here is what the HANS IV is, what has changed from the HANS III, and what else you need to use one.
- The HANS IV is approved to FIA 8858-2010
- It is 10% lighter than the HANS III
- 20 degree version, with sliding tethers and post anchors
- Three sizes, by collar size: Small, Medium and Large
- We have all three sizes in the showroom to try on

What a HANS device does
A HANS device is a frontal head restraint. It sits on the shoulders, under the shoulder straps of the harness, and two tethers link it to posts on the sides of the helmet. In a frontal impact the harness holds the body, and the tethers stop the head from being thrown forward on its own, which takes the load off the neck.
It only works as a system. You need a helmet fitted with HANS posts and a harness whose shoulder straps sit properly over the device.
What is new in the HANS IV
The HANS IV is aimed at club competitors who want an FIA approved device without paying for carbon. It is 10% lighter than the HANS III it replaces, and the shape has been refined, with taller wings that help keep the harness straps in place.
The pads are a foam compound for comfort and durability, and it comes with sliding tethers, which allow more head movement for looking around. This is the 20 degree version, approved to FIA 8858-2010.

Sizes and why trying one on helps
The HANS IV is sized by collar size. A device that is too small can dig in, and one that is too large may not sit correctly on the shoulders, so it is worth getting right.
Garreth’s advice is to bring your helmet with you. We can clip the tethers on, check how the device sits with the shoulder straps over it, and make sure it suits your seat. Our guide on which HANS device you need explains angles and sizes in more detail.
| Size | Collar size |
|---|---|
| Small | 33 to 39cm (13 to 15.5in) |
| Medium | 38 to 44cm (15 to 17.5in) |
| Large | 43 to 46cm (17 to 18in) |
Helmet posts and harness
The tethers clip to posts fitted to the helmet, so check your helmet has them or can take them. Many FIA helmets come ready for posts, and posts are sold separately too.
Whether a head restraint is required depends on what you compete in, so check your championship’s regulations. If you are buying a helmet at the same time, some of our helmets come as packages with a head restraint already matched.
