BC Racing RM Series Coilovers Explained

RM is BC Racing’s inverted strut coilover. Where BR runs a conventional strut, RM turns it around, the wider damper tube mounts to the body and the rod runs down to the hub. That is stiffer under load and lighter at the wheel, which is why it turns up on the cars that either get driven hard on track or carry more weight than the average hatchback.

Check our fitment list and RM almost never appears on its own. Of the 393 RM listings live on site, 392 have a BR listing against the same car. So ordering RM on most fitments means choosing the inverted strut version of a kit that already exists in BR, rather than picking from some separate BC lineup.

Who ends up on RM

Two groups, and they look different on paper. The first is the dedicated track cars: Toyota’s GR86 and GR Corolla, Subaru’s BRZ and WRX, Honda’s Civic Type R chassis, all cars that get pushed hard enough for the stiffer strut to earn its keep. The second is heavier road cars, where the extra load through the corner is the reason for RM: Mazda’s CX-5, Mitsubishi’s Outlander, Ford’s Mustang, BMW’s 3 Series and Mercedes’ A-Class among them.

Both groups are buying the same design change for different reasons. If you are unsure which side your car sits on, check the fitment title on the product page, it states drive type and any rear suspension detail so you know exactly what you are ordering.

Where RM turns up across the range

RM is fitted across 33 makes and 393 listings. BMW carries the most by a distance at 64, with Volkswagen and Toyota tied on 35, then Subaru, Nissan, Ford and Mitsubishi. The table below covers the top 15, the remaining 18 makes carry RM in smaller numbers, from a handful of listings down to single fitments on makes like Alfa Romeo and Suzuki.

A cross-section of what RM covers

The kits below span the range: Toyota’s GR86 and Subaru’s BRZ built for the circuit, the Focus ST Wagon and Civic as everyday performance cars, then heavier fitments like the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mazda CX-5. Prices sit mostly around the same mark, the wider BMW and Mustang fitments run a little higher.

Final thoughts

If your car has RM listed, it almost certainly has BR listed too, so the decision is less about which BC range and more about whether you want the inverted strut. BMW carries the deepest RM range on our site by some margin, our BMW guide covers that range in full and our BC Racing series guide covers where RM sits against BR, ER, ZX and the rest.
