Customer Ford Escort Mk1 With An OMP Carbon S Steering Wheel

Customer car, November 2024

We always like seeing where our parts end up, and this one is special: a Ford Escort Mk1, restored from the ground up and finished in Nitrous Blue Pearl, with an OMP Carbon S steering wheel from us in the middle of a very well finished cockpit.

Our customer sent us the story of the car and the photos, and they show a build where classic looks and modern motorsport parts have been put together with a lot of care.

  • Ford Escort Mk1, first restored in 2008
  • Full nut and bolt restoration from 2020
  • 2.1 all steel Dunnell Zetec, ATR throttle bodies, Emerald management
  • Quaife 60G sequential gearbox, AP clutch and brakes
  • Full Alcantara retrim and a custom digital dash
  • OMP Carbon S wheel, 320mm, supplied by GSM Performance

The story of the car

Our customer’s time with this Escort goes back to 2008, when it had its first restoration. Then life got in the way and the car was parked up for more than ten years. In 2020 it came back out, and what was meant to be a light refresh turned into a full nut and bolt restoration.

The only original parts of the shell left are the roof and the rear quarters. Everything else has been rebuilt, and the whole car is finished in Nitrous Blue Pearl, a colour that suits the Mk1’s lines very well.

What is under it

The engine is a 2.1 litre all steel Dunnell Zetec, running ATR throttle bodies and Emerald engine management. It drives through a Quaife 60G sequential gearbox, with an AP clutch, and AP brakes to match.

The rear axle has been shortened to fit 8 inch wide wheels, and the car sits on fully adjustable Group 4 suspension, so it can be set up for a track day or a drive on the road.

The cockpit and the OMP Carbon S

Inside, the car has a full Alcantara retrim, including the headlining, with carbon fibre details and a custom digital dash. The OMP Carbon S we supplied sits right in front of it and fits the brief well: a 320mm flat dish wheel with carbon fibre spokes, a suede rim and a yellow top marker.

In the photos the wheel is mounted on a quick release hub, which makes getting in and out of a car like this far easier. The dark suede and the carbon sit neatly with the Alcantara, and the yellow marker picks up the gold of the hub.

Inside the Escort: the OMP Carbon S in front of the custom digital dash.

The Carbon S uses the standard six bolt, 70mm PCD pattern, so it fits OMP, Sparco and MOMO boss kits, with the boss specific to the car underneath. For anyone planning something similar, our Ford steering wheel hub guide is the place to start, and Garreth’s advice is to sort the seat position first, then choose the wheel diameter and dish to suit it.
