Customer Question: Which Steering Wheel Do You Recommend For My Ford Mustang MK1 1972?
Classic Mustang steering wheel guide
A customer with a 1972 Ford Mustang, the last years of the first generation that many owners call the Mk1, asked us which steering wheel we would recommend. Our answer is not one particular wheel. Get the right boss kit for the car, and then choose any wheel that suits the way the car looks and drives.
For a car with this much period character, we lean towards classic designs: wood or plain leather rims, polished or brushed spokes. Here is how to put the setup together.
- The B-G Racing BG8250 hub is listed for the Ford Mustang 1968 to 1977
- It is drilled for both 6x70 mm and 6x74 mm wheels
- MOMO, Sparco and OMP wheels all use 6x70 mm
- Classic wood rim wheels from MOMO and OMP suit the car's interior
- A 350 mm wheel keeps the leverage an older car needs

What is on this page
Start with the boss kit
The boss kit is the part that fits your car’s steering column, so it is the one to get right first. For this car we recommend the B-G Racing BG8250 hub, which we list for the Ford Mustang from 1968 to 1977. It is machined from aluminium, is a non-collapsible design, and bolts on.
Its useful feature is dual drilling. The wheel face is drilled for both 6×70 mm wheels, which covers MOMO, Sparco and OMP, and 6×74 mm wheels, which covers Nardi and Personal. You are not tied to one brand, now or later.
Classic American columns vary more than modern ones, and some cars have had columns changed over the years. Garreth’s advice is to send us the year, model and a photo of the column before ordering, so we can confirm the hub is right for your car.
Why the wheel choice is so open
MOMO, Sparco and OMP all drill their wheels with six holes on a 70 mm circle. Because the Mustang hub has the same pattern, any of their wheels bolts straight on, with no adapter.
A quick release, if you want one, uses the same pattern on both sides and sits between the hub and the wheel. Our guide to boss kit and steering wheel compatibility explains how the parts stack together.

Classic wheels that suit a Mustang
A modern suede race wheel can look out of place in a 1970s interior, so we usually point Mustang owners towards heritage designs.
From MOMO, the Heritage wood range is the obvious place to start. The Indy Heritage is a 350 mm wheel with a gloss mahogany rim and drilled spokes. The Montecarlo Heritage is also 350 mm in mahogany, with finger grips on the rim, and the California Heritage is a slightly larger 360 mm wood wheel with polished chrome spokes. From OMP, the Mugello is a 350 mm flat wood-rim wheel.
Size matters on an older car. A 350 mm or 360 mm wheel keeps enough leverage for parking, particularly on a car without power steering; a much smaller wheel makes it heavy at low speed. For a look at a wood wheel in a classic, see our OMP Mugello in a Triumph Vitesse.

An optional quick release
Some owners add a quick release to make getting in and out easier, or to take the wheel away when the car is parked. The B-G Racing universal quick release takes both 6×70 mm and 6×74 mm wheels, but it brings the wheel about 50 mm closer to you, so allow for that when you choose the wheel’s dish. On a classic road car you may prefer to leave it off to keep the interior looking period.
What boss kit fits a 1972 Ford Mustang?
We recommend the B-G Racing BG8250, listed for the Mustang from 1968 to 1977; send us the car’s details and we will confirm it.
Can I fit a MOMO wheel to a classic Mustang?
Yes. With the correct boss kit, any MOMO, Sparco or OMP wheel bolts on, as they all use 6×70 mm.
What size steering wheel suits a classic Mustang?
A 350 mm or 360 mm wheel keeps enough leverage for parking, especially without power steering.
Does the B-G Mustang hub take Nardi wheels?
Yes. It is drilled for both 6×70 mm and 6×74 mm, so Nardi and Personal wheels fit too.
A dual-drilled hub and a 350 mm wood rim keep the period look and the leverage.
Send us the year, model and a photo of the column and we will confirm the boss kit before you order.
