The Five Most Affordable HANS and FHR Devices

FIA safety equipment from £234.60

Eleven HANS and FHR devices in the category. Five of them hold FIA 8858-2010, the current approval FIA-regulated championships require for frontal head restraints. Those are the five on this page. Two devices at £509 and £535 sit between picks four and five on price but carry non-FIA approvals and are not included.

The five picks run from £234.60 to £1,206. The first four are composite devices at a fixed 20-degree tether angle, all priced under £360. After those four, there is a gap of £852 to the fifth pick, which moves to carbon fibre. No 30-degree tether option appears among the five picks here. Sizing is by shoulder width, not head circumference, and most devices here come in medium and large only.

  • The cheapest FIA 8858-2010 HANS device on this page is the Stand21 Club Series 1 at £234.60. Available in medium and large.
  • All five picks hold FIA 8858-2010. Two devices in the category at £509 and £535 carry non-FIA approvals and are excluded from this page.
  • The Hans IV Device at £324 is the only pick here available in Small, Medium and Large. All other devices on this page come in medium and large only.
  • All five picks are fixed at a 20-degree tether angle. The cheapest 30-degree option in the full category is the Stand21 Ultimate Series at £1,290.
  • HANS and FHR devices are sized by shoulder width, not head circumference. Get the shoulder measurement before ordering.

Two devices in this category carry non-FIA approvals and are not includedThe Schroth SHR Flex at £509 holds SFI 38.1, which is a US standard, not FIA 8858-2010. The Hans III Youth at £535 carries no FIA 8858-2010 approval. Both sit in price between the fourth and fifth picks on this page. If your event or series specifies FIA 8858-2010, neither of these qualifies. Check the Approval attribute on the listing before ordering, and check your event supplementary regulations if the standard is not clear. If in doubt, call us on 0115 9893488 and we will confirm what your series accepts.

Stand21 Club Series 1, £234.60. The cheapest FIA 8858-2010 approved device on this page. Composite construction, fixed 20-degree tether angle, available in medium and large. Garreth would point a club racer at the Club Series 1 if they are buying their first HANS device and budget is the deciding factor. It does the job on FIA compliance at the entry price, and there is not much in the construction that would make you notice the difference on a sprint day. The gap to the Club Series 3 at £300 is £65. Both are composite, both are 20 degrees, both come in medium and large. The Club Series 3 uses a higher-specification composite than the Club Series 1.

Stand21 Club Series 3, £300. Sixty-five pounds more than the Club Series 1 and the same manufacturer. The improvement is in the composite specification, not the geometry. Medium and large, fixed 20-degree tether, FIA 8858-2010. If budget is not the main constraint and you are choosing between the two Stand21 devices, the Club Series 3 is the better-built option. The gap to the Hans IV at £324 is £24, and the Hans IV is the only device on this page available in Small.

Hans IV Device, £324. The only pick here available in Small, Medium and Large. If your shoulder measurement comes in below the medium threshold, the Hans IV is the only entry-level FIA 8858-2010 device on this page that fits. Cameron checks the shoulder width against the manufacturer’s size chart before any HANS or FHR order goes out. With four of the five picks here in medium and large only, a smaller shoulder measurement settles the question before price does. FIA 8858-2010, composite, 20-degree fixed tether. The gap to the Schroth at £354 is £30.

Schroth Super Sport XLT FHR, £354. Schroth is a German manufacturer with an FIA-rated harness and FHR range. The Super Sport XLT holds FIA 8858-2010, composite construction, fixed 20-degree tether, medium and large. It is the highest-priced composite device in the five picks. The gap to the Hans Pro Ultra Lite at £1,206 is £852, and what you get for that step is carbon fibre.

Hans Pro Ultra Lite, £1,206. The only carbon fibre device in the five picks. FIA 8858-2010, fixed 20-degree tether, medium and large. Carbon is lighter than composite, and that weight saving adds up over a long endurance day or a full season in the car. For a club racer doing sprint or time attack events, Garreth’s view is that the composite Club Series 1 at £234.60 does the same job on compliance. The carbon makes sense once you are in the car often enough that the weight difference is something you actually feel.

The step worth making in this category depends on your shoulder measurement. If you measure in the Small range, the Hans IV at £324 is the only option here and price does not come into it. For medium and large buyers, the composite picks between £234.60 and £354 do the same job on FIA compliance. The move to the Hans Pro Ultra Lite at £1,206 is worth considering if you are planning an endurance season or doing track time consistently across a full year.

Sizing by shoulder width

HANS and FHR devices are sized by shoulder width, not head circumference. The measurement is taken across the top of the back from shoulder point to shoulder point, in centimetres. Small, Medium and Large correspond to specific shoulder width ranges that vary between manufacturers, so a Medium from Stand21 may not be the same fit as a Medium from another brand.

Of the five picks here, four are available in Medium and Large only: the Stand21 Club Series 1 and 3, the Schroth Super Sport XLT FHR, and the Hans Pro Ultra Lite. The Hans IV Device at £324 is the only one that also comes in Small. If your shoulder measurement puts you below the medium threshold for the other devices, the Hans IV is the device to look at, and the price difference from the Club Series 3 at £300 is £24.

Cameron checks the shoulder measurement against the manufacturer’s size chart before any HANS or FHR order goes out. If you are between sizes or not sure where to measure from, ring us on 0115 9893488 and Cameron will go through the measurement with you before anything is ordered. We have the Nottingham showroom if you prefer to come in and check the fit in person.

Tether angle: 20 degrees and when 30 degrees matters

All five picks here are fixed at a 20-degree tether angle. The tether angle is the angle at which the straps run from the device down to the shoulder belts. A 20-degree angle is designed for standard seating positions where the seat back is close to upright, which covers most circuit cars.

A 30-degree device is needed where the seat has a more significantly reclined position. This applies to some GT cars, certain touring cars and cars where the seat is mounted low and tilted back. None of the five picks on this page have a 30-degree tether. The cheapest 30-degree option in the full category is the Stand21 Ultimate Series at £1,290. If you have a reclined seat position that requires 30 degrees, that is outside the scope of this page.

Cameron checks the seat recline angle against the device specification before any HANS or FHR order goes out. Fitting a 20-degree device to a car that requires 30 degrees is a fitment problem. If you are not sure which tether angle your car needs, call us on 0115 9893488 before ordering and Cameron will ask the right questions before a device goes on a car.

Comparing HANS devices with hybrid head restraintsIf you are deciding between a standard HANS or FHR device and a hybrid design, the full comparison is covered in a separate guide. Hybrid devices use a different construction and may suit some car and harness setups better than a traditional HANS. Read the HANS Device vs Hybrid Head and Neck Restraint guide here.

The Stand21 Club Series 1 at £234.60 inc VAT, in medium and large. It holds FIA 8858-2010 approval, composite construction, and a fixed 20-degree tether angle. Two devices in the category at £509 and £535 are cheaper than the fifth pick on this page but carry non-FIA approvals and are not included in this comparison.

Functionally they do the same job: a frontal head restraint that limits head and neck movement in an impact and works with a full harness. HANS stands for Head And Neck Support, which was the original patented design. FHR stands for Frontal Head Restraint, the generic term that covers all devices of this type from any manufacturer. The Schroth Super Sport XLT on this page is marketed as an FHR. All five picks here hold FIA 8858-2010 and do the same job.

The size is based on shoulder width, measured across the top of the back from shoulder point to shoulder point. You need the centimetre figure, not a shirt size or a hat size. The manufacturer’s size chart for each device maps that measurement to Small, Medium or Large. If you are not sure how to measure, ring 0115 9893488 and Cameron will walk you through it before the order goes out.

The tether angle must match your seat’s recline. A 20-degree device suits a seat back that is close to upright, which covers most circuit cars. A 30-degree device is needed where the seat is more significantly reclined. All five picks on this page are 20 degrees. If you are running a reclined seat position and think you may need 30 degrees, call us on 0115 9893488 and Cameron will check the seat angle before recommending a device.

A HANS or FHR device requires a 3-inch (75mm) harness shoulder strap to attach the tethers correctly. A 2-inch strap is too narrow. Most FIA-rated 6-point harnesses use 3-inch shoulder straps, but check the shoulder strap width on your harness before ordering. Call us on 0115 9893488 if you are unsure whether your harness is compatible.
