What is new in the 2024 Race V3
The Race V3 is Alpinestars’ affordable FIA underwear range, aimed at club racers as much as professionals. For 2024 it has a new design, and the colours have changed from anthracite and grey to black or white.
The fabric is Lenzing FR, a flame resistant fibre, with elastane mixed in so the garments stretch and move with you. It is soft against the skin to cut down irritation over a long day, and light enough to be comfortable under a race suit.
The range is three pieces: a long sleeve top, bottoms and a balaclava. Each one is approved to FIA 8856-2018, the standard most circuit, sprint and rally championships ask for under an FIA suit, and to SFI 3.3.
The balaclava has a drink tube opening with reinforced stitching, so you can use a drinks system without cutting the fabric.

Why the base layer matters
Racing underwear goes under the suit as an extra layer of protection against heat and flame. Most championships that ask for an FIA suit also ask for approved underwear, and the approval belongs to each garment, so it is worth checking every label. Our guide to FIA fireproof underwear explains what is needed.
Garreth’s advice is to choose underwear you will be happy to wear all day, because a layer that is uncomfortable tends to get left in the bag.
In the showroom, and the alternative
We have a small number of Alpinestars balaclavas on the showroom shelf, in the earlier grey Race V3 design. They are one size, with a single eye opening, and they are a good value way to add an approved balaclava to your kit.
If you want something closer fitting, the Alpinestars ZX Evo V2 range is the step up. It is approved to FIA 8856-2018 and is designed to help keep your core temperature down, and the balaclava and long sleeve top come in several colours.
