What a boss kit does
An aftermarket steering wheel will not bolt straight onto a car’s column. The boss kit, also called a hub adapter, sits between the two. One side matches the splines on the column, and the other side matches the bolt pattern on the back of the wheel.
Every car’s column is different, which is why the hub is specific to the car and the wheel is not. Get the hub right for the Fiat and you can then choose from a wide spread of wheels.
The new Fiat range
The 76 new kits cover a long run of Fiat history. There are hubs for the older cars such as the 1100, 124 Berlina, Coupe, Sport and Spider, the 128, 131, 850 and X1/9, and for later cars including the Uno, Cinquecento, Seicento, Punto, Grande Punto, Panda, Stilo and Bravo. There are even kits for the Ducato and Doblo vans.
Many Fiats changed their column part way through production, so several models have more than one kit split by year. Check the year range in the title matches your car before you order.
How the B-G kits are made
Each hub is machined from aluminium by B-G Racing and comes with the screws needed to mount the wheel to the hub. You reuse the column nut from the standard wheel. The horn contact carries through the hub, so a wheel with a horn push will still sound the horn once it is wired up.
Most of the Fiat kits are a standard fixed design, and a smaller number are collapsible. The listing for each car tells you which one it is. On any Fiat with a driver airbag, taking the standard wheel off removes the airbag, so disconnect the battery before you start and have the airbag dealt with properly.
Choosing a wheel to go with it
Every one of these Fiat hubs is drilled for both 6x70mm and 6x74mm patterns. The 6x70mm pattern covers MOMO, Sparco, OMP and Sabelt wheels, and 6x74mm covers brands such as Nardi, so you are not tied to one maker if you change the wheel later.
Garreth’s advice is to think about dish and diameter before brand. A flat wheel suits a road car where the driving position is already set, and a deeper dish brings the wheel closer on a car with a fixed seat. Our guide to steering wheel dish explains the difference, and the Fiat and Abarth hub guide lists the kits by model.
