Sparco has released new versions of its Slalom, Skid and Skid Plus race boots for 2022, and all three are now on our online store. They sit at the entry end of the Sparco boot range, which makes them the ones most new drivers will be looking at.
They are online now and we are waiting for them to reach the showroom. Here is how the three differ, so you can pick the right one.

The Sparco Slalom
The Slalom is the newly released entry level boot, and the one we expect most first time buyers to choose. The new version has improved heat and flame protection for its FIA approval, extra protection over the outer toe, and a sole that is anti-stick, anti-slip and resistant to oil and fuel.
The upper is suede and the insole is leather, so it is comfortable out of the box. It has the same features and look as far more expensive race boots, which is why we rate it as a first boot for new drivers. Our listing shows it approved to FIA 8856-2018 and SFI 3.3/5.
The Skid and the Skid Plus
The Skid and the Skid Plus are built to the latest FIA homologation for heat and flame resistance. Both have abrasion resistant inserts at the sides and heel, which protect the foot and help the boot last longer, and a breathable flame retardant lining that is treated to keep your feet fresher for longer.
They share an overlapping tongue, high abrasion resistant leather inserts on the sides, and tough Kevlar lace loops.
The difference is underneath. The Skid Plus has a shock absorbing, anti vibration sole, which makes it the more comfortable of the two over a long day. The Skid has a thin rubber sole with a grip texture, which gives more feel through the pedals.
Which one to choose
Race boots are required in most forms of motorsport. They protect your feet if there is a fire, thanks to the flame retardant lining, and they give you grip and feel on the pedals that ordinary shoes do not.
For a first set of boots, all three are sensible choices. Garreth’s advice is to choose on fit and feel: the Slalom if you want a soft suede boot, the Skid for the thinnest sole and the most pedal feel, and the Skid Plus if comfort over long sessions matters more.
