OMP Electrical Fire Extinguisher Now On Display
Safety equipment news, March 2024
We now have an OMP electrical fire extinguisher system on display in the showroom: the Platinum Collection 2.5 kg kit. It is a plumbed in system, activated electrically, and it is one of the most compact bottles of its type, which makes it a good fit for smaller cars where space is tight.
It joins the hand held extinguishers already on our display, so you can now see both kinds side by side. Here is what comes in the kit and how it differs from a hand held unit.
- OMP Platinum Collection electrical extinguisher system now on display
- 2.5 kg system with a 130 mm diameter alloy bottle
- Six nozzles: four for the engine bay, two for the cockpit
- Fired from inside the cockpit or from an external button
- Filled with OMP Ecolife foam
- Homologated for closed cockpit saloon and GT cars

What is in the Platinum Collection kit
The kit is built around a brushed alloy bottle, 130 mm in diameter, on its own mounting bracket, with metal clamps to hold it in place. It weighs 2.5 kg and is filled with OMP’s Ecolife fluid, a foam forming extinguishant.
Everything needed for a proper installation is in the box: the activation switch panel with its red button, the wiring, the pipe, and six nozzles with their fittings. Four nozzles go to the engine bay and two to the cockpit. Once it is plumbed in, the system can be fired electrically from inside the cockpit or from the external push button, so a marshal can set it off from outside the car.
The label on our display bottle gives its homologation as the Ecolife Gold Saloon system, for closed cockpit saloon and GT cars. That covers most club saloons, rally cars and sports cars with a roof.
Next to it on the display is the OMP 2 kg Novec hand held extinguisher, in a polished stainless steel bottle with quick release mounting clamps. Novec is a clean agent that leaves very little residue, which matters in a car full of wiring.

Plumbed in or hand held
A hand held extinguisher is mounted in the car within reach and used by the driver or a marshal. A plumbed in system is fixed in the car with its own pipework and nozzles, and discharges into the engine bay and cockpit at once when it is fired. Many championships ask for one or the other, and some ask for both.
OMP make mechanical plumbed in systems too, fired by a pull cable. An electrical system like the Platinum Collection is fired by a button instead. Garreth’s advice is to check your series regulations before you buy, as the required size and type vary. Our guide to mechanical and electrical extinguishers explains the difference in more detail.

Our extinguisher display
The Platinum Collection kit brings our extinguisher display to three: the electrical system and two hand held extinguishers, each supplied with quick release straps. The OMP 2 kg Novec and a polished Lifeline foam spray hand held are the two on show.
Seeing the bottles in person helps with the practical question of where one will fit in your car. Bring your measurements, or come in and look at the sizes before you order. Our guide to FIA fire extinguisher homologations covers what the approvals mean.
