Racewear news, May 2022
New FIA race gloves have been arriving for the 2022 season, and we have added them to the site from Sparco, OMP, Alpinestars and others, in a good spread of sizes and colours. At the same time we have updated the gloves we already listed with their current FIA approvals, fuller information, prices and bundle items.
Four of them are on display in the showroom, one from each of four brands, so you can try them on before you order. Here is what they are and how they differ.
- New FIA race gloves added for 2022 from Sparco, OMP, Alpinestars and more
- Existing glove listings updated with approvals, information, prices and bundle items
- Four gloves on display: Alpinestars, OMP, P1 and Sparco

What is new for 2022
Race gloves are compulsory in most forms of motorsport, and they do two jobs. They protect your hands in a fire, and they give you grip on the wheel and the gear lever. Most are made from Nomex or a similar aramid, with a palm material chosen for grip.
For 2022 we have added new gloves from the bigger racewear brands, and gone through every existing listing so the approval, the information and the price are current. Bundle items are on the listings too, so gloves can go in the basket with a matching suit or boots.
The four gloves in the showroom
Alpinestars Tech-1 Start V2. Updated with improved flame and heat resistance and homologated to FIA 8856-2018. Alpinestars have saved weight through the fabric construction, and the palm and fingers have printed silicone grips. The fingers are box cut, with less pressure on the ring and middle fingers, so the glove is shaped for holding a wheel in a tight cockpit.
OMP First-S. A Nomex palm with silicone inserts for grip, and an elasticated wrist that keeps the glove in place.
Sparco Land. A thin, light layer of Nomex in an aramid construction, with suede reinforcement on the palm for grip. The palm is shaped to the hand’s natural position and the stitching is reinforced, so the glove does not move around on the hand.
P1. The fourth glove on the stand is from P1, in black with fluorescent yellow detailing.
Turn them over and the differences are easier to see. The Alpinestars and OMP gloves use silicone for grip, while the Sparco Land relies on suede.
Garreth's advice is to try them on and grip a wheel if you can, because the fit at the fingertips is hard to judge from a photo.

Choosing a glove
Start with the approval your championship asks for, then look at fit and grip. The approval belongs to the glove itself, so check the label. Sizes are not consistent between brands, which is one reason it helps to try them on.
If you are putting a full set together, our guide to getting into FIA racewear covers suits, boots and gloves together, and there is a separate piece on washing and caring for racewear.
