The Complete B-G and MOMO Chrysler, Mercury, Pontiac and Oldsmobile Steering Wheel Hub Guide

One boss kit covers the bulk of 1980s Chrysler imports. BG8147 was made for the K-car platform from 1984: the Daytona, Laser, Le Baron, New Yorker FWD, Saratoga, Caravan and Voyager are all on the same adapter. That is 9 of the 15 Chrysler listings from one part code.

I’m Cameron. This guide covers the full B-G and MOMO range for Chrysler, Mercury, Pontiac and Oldsmobile. Between them there are 27 listings and 13 unique part numbers. Mercury splits across the MOMO Cougar and Comet range and two B-G hubs for the earlier Ford-era Mercury. Pontiac covers the Firebird, Grand Prix and Fiero. Oldsmobile is one listing: the Cutlass from 1976. The model table below maps every car to its kit. [Illustration generated from our own product photography.]

Why you need a boss kit

The factory steering column uses a proprietary spline that does not accept an aftermarket wheel directly. A boss kit fits over the column end and presents the standard 6x70mm bolt pattern used by B-G, MOMO, OMP, Sparco and Simoni. Without it, no aftermarket wheel goes on.

B-G hubs are machined in Italy from cast aluminium and dual drilled: both 6x70mm and 6x74mm patterns are cut, so they work with any brand that uses either standard. MOMO hubs carry the 6x70mm pattern only. Both types are direct-fit on all models in this guide.

How to use this table: Find your make, then your model. The part code is the B-G or MOMO boss kit reference. Collapsible kits include a safety mechanism that collapses the column on impact; solid kits do not. Both types are direct-fit replacements that give you the standard 6x70mm MOMO/OMP/Sparco/B-G bolt pattern.

All fitments taken from our own product listings. Some listings state "All Years" or give an open start date with no end year; these are shown as "onward". Cross-catalogue notes reflect parts shared with other makes in our full boss kit range. For Mercury, two B-G listings cover the same 1972-1980 date range under different part numbers (BG8169 collapsible, BG8252 solid): these are different hubs and the type column is the key distinction.

Part code first, then year. Most Chryslers from 1984 onward take BG8147. Earlier Le Baron, Daytona, 600 and L Car models take BG8146. The Voyager from 1996 to 2000 is a later platform and takes BG8218. Mercury has two B-G listings for the 1972-1980 date range: BG8169 (collapsible) and BG8252 (solid). These are different hubs. Use the table above to find your car, or send the model year and we will confirm before you order.

Fitting a boss kit: the 6x70mm standard

Fitting is straightforward: remove the factory wheel, slide the boss kit onto the column spline, torque the spline nut and bolt on the aftermarket wheel. B-G hubs accept both 6x70mm and 6x74mm wheels because they are dual drilled. MOMO hubs are 6x70mm only.

The column on these American cars uses a standard spec that B-G and MOMO covered when these were current models. No shimming, drilling or modification needed on any of the cars in this guide.

The B-G Chrysler, Mercury, Pontiac and Oldsmobile hub range

B-G covers all four makes in this guide. The biggest group is Chrysler with 15 listings, split between two main K-car hubs (BG8146 and BG8147) and a few outliers. Mercury adds two listings. Pontiac gets the Firebird and Grand Prix. Oldsmobile is the Cutlass from 1976.

All B-G hubs here are made in Italy from cast aluminium and dual drilled for both 6x70mm and 6x74mm wheels. Most kits in this range are solid. The exception is BG8218, the Chrysler Voyager from 1996 to 2000, which is collapsible.

The MOMO Mercury and Pontiac hubs

MOMO covers Mercury and Pontiac in this guide with no Chrysler or Oldsmobile listings. Mercury gets four kits under MC4513: the Cougar from 1968 to 1988, the Comet from 1966 to 1977, the Monarch and the Bobcat. All four are collapsible.

Pontiac gets three kits. The Fiero uses MK6902, a collapsible hub that also fits the Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee under the same part number. The Firebird and Grand Prix share MC2400. All MOMO hubs in this guide are 6x70mm only and collapsible.

The Chrysler K-car connection

BG8147 was designed for the K-car platform, Chrysler's front-wheel-drive architecture from 1981. It covers the main K-car derivatives from 1984: Daytona, Laser, Le Baron, Le Baron GTS, New Yorker FWD, Saratoga, Caravan and Voyager.

The same part number appears in the Dodge catalogue (Caravan, Shadow, Spirit, Lancer, Daytona) and the Plymouth catalogue (Voyager, Caravelle, Acclaim). If you are importing a compact or minivan Chrysler from the 1984-1994 era, check whether it uses the K-car architecture. The chances are BG8147 fits.

Should you add a quick release?

A quick release fits between the boss kit and the wheel. It lets the wheel click in and out without tools, which matters in a tight cockpit. The Pontiac Fiero in particular has a narrow interior where extra clearance helps.

Both B-G and MOMO make a universal bolt-on quick release for the 6x70mm pattern. The hub goes on first, the quick release bolts to it, and any standard wheel clicks onto the quick release. No additional adapters needed.

B-G Racing quick releaseFittingSuits
UniversalBolt-onMost road and track cars, nothing to modify
StandardBolt-onThe same job in the heavier duty version
Weld-On 3-PointWeld-onA column that is already being cut and welded
Weld-On 6-PointWeld-onAs above, with the stiffer six bolt fixing

All four take the same 6 x 70mm wheels as everything else on this page, so the wheel you choose further down will fit whichever one you pick.

Pair your boss kit with a steering wheel

A boss kit without a wheel to fit is only half the job. The standard 6x70mm pattern on these hubs is shared across all B-G, MOMO, OMP, Sparco and Simoni wheels, so any wheel on our site will bolt straight on.

Smaller diameter wheels give more leg room and a quicker rack feel. The trade-off is more effort at the wheel. We stock MOMO and OMP wheels from 280mm to 380mm below.

Every wheel we sell is drilled 6 x 70mm, so any of them will bolt to any of the hubs above. The only real decision is diameter and dish, which changes how heavy the steering feels and how close the rim sits to your chest.

Final thoughts

BG8147 is the answer for most 1980s Chrysler imports on the K-car platform from 1984. Before 1984 or on the early Le Baron and 600, use BG8146. The Voyager from 1996 to 2000 is a later platform and takes BG8218.

Mercury, Pontiac and Oldsmobile each have smaller ranges. The model table at the top of this guide maps every car in the range to its part code. If you want to confirm the fit before ordering, send the make, model and year. Cameron.
