The Complete B-G and MOMO Ford Steering Wheel Hub Guide

Ford take up more of our boss kit shelf than any other make, a hundred and fifty seven listings. The reason is that Ford ran three car companies at once and gave them the same model names. A Ford USA Escort is not a Ford Escort. The Capri sold in America is a different car from the one sold here. Order off the model name on its own and the hub will not go on the column.

So the page is laid out the way you would work it out yourself. The European cars come first, on a chart you can find your own year on, then the American and Australian ones, which come down to four part numbers between them. The photograph is an illustration, generated from our own product photography of an OMP wheel rather than shot in the workshop.

Right hand drive Ford Escort Mk2 cabin with a three spoke OMP steering wheel fitted to a boss kit

Sixty three parts, and how to find the one you need

Those hundred and fifty seven listings come down to sixty three actual part numbers, so the range is smaller than the shelf makes it look. The chart below covers the European cars. Find your model down the left, run along to your year, and the block you land on is the code to order.

The green run is the one to spot. MOMO MA4538R covers the Fiesta from 2002 to 2014, the Mondeo, the Transit, the Transit Connect and the 2007 Mustang GT, which is a good part of what Ford built this century sitting on one part number. The Escort is the opposite case. Seven parts across its life once you count both brands, and the changeover years do not line up between them, so read the years on your own listing rather than assuming one Mk3 takes what the next Mk3 takes.

Drawn to scale

Sixty years of Fords, and the one part that covers the modern range

Find your model on the left, run along to your year, and the block you land on is the part code to order. Every green block is the same part, MOMO MA4538R, which takes in the Fiesta, the Mondeo, the Transit, the Transit Connect and the 2007 Mustang GT. Where a block fades, the listing names no year on that end, so the fitment carries on past the edge of the chart.

Years come from the fitment named on our own listings. The Focus, the Puma, the Probe, the Laser and the Sierra above 1.3 carry no years on their listings, so they are written about below rather than drawn here, and the American and Australian Fords sit on four B-G parts of their own further down the page. Two rows of Transit because a late eighties van has both a solid and a collapsible B-G option. Check the years your own listing names before you order.

Three things to read off the listing before you order, and all three are on the product page.

The model and the years first, because Ford reused names across continents. Then the boss kit number, which is the part itself. Two listings with different titles and the same code are the same physical hub, and on this make that happens more than on any other. Then the line that says collapsible or solid.

If your car sits on a changeover year, or it came in as an import, send us the registration or the chassis number and I will check it against the column before anything ships. Fitment queries land with me, Cameron, so you get an answer rather than a copy of the listing read back at you.

Why one hub takes wheels from four different brands

Every MOMO, Sparco, OMP and Simoni wheel we sell uses the same bolt pattern, six bolts on a 70mm circle. Your Ford column is splined, and every make of car splines it differently, so the hub is the piece that turns that spline into the one shared pattern. Get the right hub on the car and the wheel choice opens up completely.

B-G drill their hubs twice, 6 x 70mm and 6 x 74mm, so a Nardi, Personal or Raid wheel bolts straight on as well as anything on the MOMO pattern. They are cast aluminium and made in Italy. MOMO drill theirs for the 70mm pattern only.

Collapsible or solid is the other line to read, and on Ford it splits by series rather than by brand. Every MOMO hub in the MA series is listed solid, which is MA4536R, MA4538R and MA4539R, and between them they carry most of the modern range. Every MOMO hub in the MK and MC series is collapsible. On the B-G side all sixty seven American and Australian hubs are solid, and nine of the European ones are collapsible. The OMP hubs are all solid. Every product page states which it is, so read that line rather than going by the badge.

The B-G hubs for European Fords

Ninety nine of the hundred and fifty seven Ford listings are B-G, which is the largest range any one brand carries for any one make on the site. Twenty four of them are for cars sold here and they are all below.

Three worth knowing. BG8039 covers the Escort Mk1, the Cortina MkII and the pre-1972 Capri on a single part. BG8320 is the Cortina Lotus of 1962 to 1966 on its own. The Transit runs through four B-G hubs and the late eighties vans have two of them, BG8045 solid and BG8170 collapsible, so that is one to check rather than guess.

The other seventy five B-G listings are mostly American and Australian cars, and they are further down the page.

The MOMO Ford hubs, and where else they turn up

All forty MOMO Ford hubs are here. What makes them worth reading about is where else they turn up, because Ford borrowed platforms freely and the hub follows the platform rather than the badge.

MK5702 is the one that catches people out. Our listings put it on the Probe and the Laser, and the same part is the hub for the Mazda MX-5 of 1989 to 2005, the RX-7, the MX-3, the 323, the 626 and the 121, plus four Kias. Fourteen listings, one part. MK7800 runs the other way into British Leyland: the Anglia, the 1968 to 1975 Escort and the 1974 to 1979 Capri share it with the MGB, the Midget and the Austin-Healey Sprite. MK4040R, the hub for the 2009 to 2016 Ka, is the Fiat 500 hub, which follows once you remember what that car was built on.

The same thing carries into the modern parts. MA4536R also fits the Mazda 121, MA4538R also fits the Mazda 2, and MK4529 covers the 121 of 1996.

The American and Australian Fords

Seventy three B-G listings cover the Fords built outside Europe, and four part numbers do most of the work.

BG8259 carries seventeen listings, everything from 1984 onward: the Mustang and Mustang GT, Thunderbird, Taurus, Ranger, Bronco II and Aerostar, along with the Mercury badged Sable, Topaz, Cougar and Lynx. BG8256 is the same set of cars before 1983. BG8255 is the Australian range, the Falcon XA through XD and the Fairlane ZC through ZJ. BG8252 takes the sixties and seventies cars, the Torino, Ranchero, Pinto, Maverick, Comet and Bronco.

The selection below takes in all four of those and the smaller parts alongside them, so you can see which one your car falls under, and the B-G button further down lists all ninety nine. The four Australian OMP hubs are in there too, the Falcon, the Laser, the TE Cortina and the Fairlane codes.

If you would rather browse the lot than work off the chart, these buttons land on our full Ford range for each brand. Ninety nine kits from B-G, forty from MOMO and seventeen from OMP. There is a single Sparco Ford hub as well, for the Fiesta ST, and it is on its own listing here.

Why not add a steering wheel quick release kit

A quick release sits between the boss kit and the wheel, in the spot shown on the diagram further up the page. Press the collar, pull, and the wheel comes off in your hand. It locates in one position going back on, so the wheel returns straight every time.

Two reasons people fit one. The first is getting in and out. With a cage, a bucket seat or the roof up on a small car, taking the wheel off buys a surprising amount of room. The second is that a car sitting there with no steering wheel in it is a good deal less appealing to anyone who fancies driving it away.

Our quick releases use the same six bolt 70mm pattern as the wheels and the hubs, so one drops into the middle of the stack without anything else changing.

Pair your Ford boss kit with a steering wheel

With the hub sorted the wheel choice is open, and anything on the 70mm pattern fits. On a Mk1 or Mk2 Escort a 350mm to 370mm classic three spoke suits the driving position and keeps the dials in view, which is why the wood rimmed wheels below still sell as well as they do. On a Fiesta ST or a Focus most people go smaller, somewhere around 320mm to 350mm. The steering gets a shade heavier at parking speeds and you gain room to get in and out.

Every wheel we list uses that same six bolt 70mm pattern, so once the hub is on the car you can change the wheel later without touching anything else.

Final thoughts

If you take one thing off this page, take the part number. Ford model names moved between continents and between decades and the code on the listing did not, so two listings carrying the same code are the same hub whatever the title says.

Anything you are unsure about, send the registration or a photo of the wheel off the car and we will match it.
