The OMP Proban race suit, single layer flame resistant Proban. Part number IA0-1901-A01-071.

What it is approved to, and what that rules out

SFI 3.2A/1. That is an American standard and it is not FIA 8856-2018, so if your event requires an FIA homologated suit, and most licensed circuit competition in this country does, this will not satisfy a scrutineer.

Worth knowing even within SFI: 3.2A/1 is the entry rating and 3.2A/5 is a considerably higher one. Check which your event actually asks for rather than assuming any SFI number will do.

Tell us the series you are running and we will point you at the right thing. We would rather do that than have you turned away at signing on.

Where it does belong

Pit lane and crew work, track days, and events that do not require FIA homologation. Proban is a flame retardant treatment applied to cotton, so it breathes far better than a multi layer Nomex suit and is considerably more pleasant to spend a day in when you are working rather than driving.

The practical details

Discreet hip pockets, elasticated wrists and ankle cuffs. Black only, in sizes S to XXL.

If you want a two colour option for a crew, the OS10 is the same single layer Proban construction in black and white.

Sizing

Cut to match the rest of the OMP range, so a crew in these and a driver in an OMP suit look like one team. Tell us your height, chest and inside leg. A crew suit should let you work in it rather than fit like a driver’s suit.

Crew and mechanics wear size guide

Pit and workshop kit is sized on the same ladders as driver kit, so if you already know your race suit or glove size you know this too. The one thing to watch is that overalls come in two systems: Sparco use letters and OMP use the numeric ladder.

Overalls

Sparco MS-4 and MS-5, and the Proban suitLetters, XS to XXL.
Letter Equivalent Chest (cm) Waist (cm)
XS 44 / 46 86 – 93 74 – 81
S 48 / 50 94 – 101 82 – 87
M 52 / 54 102 – 109 88 – 97
L 56 / 58 110 – 117 98 – 105
XL 60 / 62 118 – 125 106 – 113
XXL 64 / 66 126 – 133 114 – 121

These are the bands from Sparco’s own body size chart, which is what their letters follow. The OMP Proban race suit is also sold S to XXL and uses the same pattern.

OMP Summer and Blast EvoNumeric, 44 to 64. The same ladder as OMP race suits.
Size Chest (cm) Waist (cm) Height (cm)
44 87 – 91 71 – 75 155 – 165
46 91 – 95 75 – 79 158 – 170
48 95 – 99 79 – 83 165 – 175
50 99 – 103 83 – 87 170 – 180
52 103 – 107 87 – 91 170 – 183
54 107 – 111 91 – 95 177 – 187
56 111 – 115 95 – 99 182 – 190
58 115 – 119 99 – 103 185 – 195
60 119 – 123 103 – 107 187 – 198
62 123 – 127 107 – 111 190 – 200
64 127 – 131 111 – 115 190 – 200
Mechanics overalls are meant to be roomierUnlike a race suit, you want room to crouch, reach and kneel in these all day. If you are between two sizes take the larger one, which is the opposite of the advice for a driving suit.

Gloves

Measure around your knuckles, across the widest part of the palm, leaving the thumb out.

Letter Numeric Sparco palm (cm) OMP palm (cm)
XS 8 20.5 – 21.5 20.8 – 21.5
S 9 21.5 – 22.5 21.6 – 22.3
M 10 22.5 – 23.5 22.4 – 23
L 11 23.5 – 24.5 23.1 – 23.7
XL 12 24.5 – 25 23.8 – 24.8
XXL 13 25 – 25.5 24.7 – 25.4

Sparco and OMP agree within half a centimetre throughout. A mechanics glove should be a little looser than a driving glove so you can get it on and off quickly with dirty hands, so if you are on a boundary take the larger.

Shoes

The Sparco Fast and Chrono mechanics shoes use the standard Sparco ladder. Measure heel to longest toe, standing, and work from the bigger foot.

EU UK Foot length
37 4 24.3 cm
38 5 25.0 cm
39 5.5 25.7 cm
40 6.5 26.3 cm
41 7 27.0 cm
42 8 27.7 cm
43 9 28.3 cm
44 9.5 29.0 cm
45 10.5 29.6 cm
46 11 30.3 cm
47 12 31.0 cm
48 13 31.6 cm

The Alpinestars Radar V2 mechanics shoe uses the Alpinestars ladder instead, which carries half sizes Sparco does not: UK 7 is an EU 40.5, UK 9.5 is an EU 43.5 and UK 11 is an EU 45.5. Go by the UK size on that one. It also runs up to UK 14.

Shorts

The Sparco Bermuda cargo shorts run S to XXL on the same letter bands as the overalls above, sized on your waist rather than your chest.

A note on approvals

Some of this category is FIA 8856-2018 approved and some is not. The Sparco Tide Meca and R-Meca gloves, the OMP Pro Mech gloves and the Sparco Fast and Chrono shoes carry the driver-standard approval, which matters if you are working on a refuelling stop. The Workshop EVO gloves, the cargo shorts and the MS-4 and MS-5 overalls are workshop kit. The approval is listed on every product page.

Kitting out a team?Send us the sizes and we will sort the mix. We can usually do better on a full crew order than on the individual pieces. Call 0115 989 3488 or email Sales@GSMPerformance.co.uk.

What size should I order?
Sizes run from S to XXL. Go by your chest and height rather than your usual clothing size, and if you sit between two sizes, take the larger one so there is room for fire-resistant underwear and free arm movement at the wheel. Not sure? Send us your measurements and we will confirm the size before you order.

Is this suit legal for competition?
This suit carries SFI 3.2A/1 approval, an American standard. It is not FIA homologated, so it is not accepted at events that require FIA 8856. It suits drag, oval, and club events run to SFI rules, and general track use. Our guide on FIA versus SFI approval explains where each applies.

Do I need fireproof underwear underneath?
Yes, treat it as essential with a single-layer suit like this one. The suit provides the outer barrier and the underwear does a lot of the protective work. Our guide on whether fireproof underwear is mandatory covers the rules, and you will find tops, bottoms, socks, and balaclavas in our racing underwear range.

What does single-layer construction mean?
This is a single-layer suit, the lightest and coolest construction. It offers less fire protection than multi-layer FIA suits, which is why fire-resistant underwear underneath matters so much with it.

How do I wash it without ruining it?
Gently, and not often. Spot-clean where you can, wash cool on a delicate cycle when you must, and never use bleach or fabric softener, which degrade the fire-resistant treatment and the fabric. Air dry away from direct heat. The full routine is in our guide on washing and caring for FIA racewear.

Can I wear it for track days?
Yes. Track days do not normally require a homologated suit at all, so a race suit is more than you need, but plenty of drivers wear one for the protection and the feel. If you are putting together your first kit, our track day kit guide covers what is and is not required.

OMP splits between showroom stock and imports

What we hold in the showroom can leave the next working day. The rest arrives on our regular imports from OMP in Italy, normally inside a couple of weeks.

Check the exact item

The OMP range is far too broad for a single lead time to be honest about, so tell us the part and the size and we will confirm where it stands.
