A Complete Karting Kit For The Lowest We Can Do It

OMP Summer-K suit | Sparco K-Pole boots | Sparco K-Rookie gloves | OMP Circuit Evo 2 helmet

We get the karting kit question fairly regularly from people who have just bought their first kart or signed up for a club membership and want to know what they need to get out on circuit. The short list is a suit, boots, gloves and a helmet. The short total, at the cheapest we can do it today, is £283.53.

This guide adds up exactly that basket using live prices from the site, pulled today. Every item in it is in stock. We have also checked the approval situation for each piece, because that is the question that comes second once people see the price.

  • Total for a complete karting kit (suit, boots, gloves, helmet) at GSM Performance: £283.53.
  • The helmet (£86.73) is the cheapest single item in the basket. On karting kit, the suit and boots cost more.
  • The OMP Summer-K suit does not carry CIK approval. For competitive club karting, confirm requirements before ordering.
  • The OMP Circuit Evo 2 helmet is ECE 22-06 approved, which most UK karting venues accept.
  • Rib protection is recommended but not currently stocked here. Drop us an email or click to open a chat for sourcing advice.

That total assumes one of each. Gloves and a helmet are personal fit items, so the basket does not change between drivers. The suit and boots both come in a range of sizes, which Cameron goes through with people before any order goes out, because a suit that is two sizes too large is uncomfortable to wear for more than a few laps.

The suit

The OMP Summer-K at £85.80 is the cheapest adult kart suit in stock. It is a single-layer suit suited to indoor karting and outdoor leisure karting. The approval attribute on the listing shows Non-CIK, Non-FIA, which means it does not carry formal homologation from either body. For indoor karting tracks and most leisure outdoor venues, this is not a problem: the venue requires a suit, and this one qualifies.

If you are planning to race competitively under Motorsport UK regulations, your championship will specify whether it requires a CIK-approved suit. If it does, the cheapest option to check is the OMP KS-4 at £138, which does not state Non-CIK on its listing. Cameron can confirm the approval for your specific event before the order goes out, drop us an email or click to open a chat.

There is a junior version of the Summer-K at £71.50 with no VAT (it is zero-rated for younger drivers). If you are kitting out a young driver, that is the starting point, and Cameron can advise on the junior sizing chart before you order.

CIK approval: what it means for this basketCIK homologation applies to suits used in competitive karting events under Motorsport UK regulations. Many club karting circuits and all indoor venues accept non-CIK suits for practice and leisure sessions. For championship racing, check your series regulations. If your series requires CIK approval, the OMP KS-4 at £138 is the step up to consider, but confirm with us that it meets your specific standard before ordering.

Boots and gloves

The Sparco K-Pole at £82.20 is the cheapest kart boot in stock once you exclude the overshoes. Overshoes sit in the same category on the site, so the filter matters here: the Sparco Slip On Rubber and the Sparco Neoprene models are sold as overshoes to go over normal footwear, not as standalone kart boots. The K-Pole is a proper boot with ankle support.

The Sparco K-Rookie gloves at £28.80 are the cheapest in the karting gloves range. Cameron’s view on gloves: fit matters more than most people expect, particularly the palm width. A glove that bunches at the palm affects steering feel through a session. For a first pair that may not get heavy use, the K-Rookie is a reasonable starting point. If you are planning to race regularly, a glove with better grip construction is worth the extra spend.

The helmet

The OMP Circuit Evo 2 at £86.73 is the cheapest helmet in the karting helmets range. It carries ECE 22-06 approval, which is the standard road motorcycle helmet certification. Most UK karting venues and many club circuits accept ECE 22-06 helmets. The three colour options (white, fluro yellow, matt black) are all priced identically at £86.73 with no VAT charged, because this category is zero-rated.

For competitive karting, some Motorsport UK championships require CIK-specific or FIA-rated helmets rather than ECE 22-06. The cheapest helmet with explicit CIK/FIA approval in this range is the Sparco Club X1 Carbon at £145 (also zero-rated). That adds £58.27 to the basket but brings you into the CIK approval bracket. Garreth’s view on the choice: if you are racing competitively, confirm which standard your series requires before buying the ECE 22-06 helmet. If you are not, £86.73 is a solid entry-level karting helmet.

Cameron checks head circumference before a helmet order goes out. Helmet sizing runs differently between manufacturers, and an incorrectly-sized helmet does not do what it is designed to do at any price.

Rib protection: not in our range

Rib protection is recommended for competitive karting, and some venues require it for younger drivers. We do not currently stock kart rib protectors or chest protectors. If you need one, drop us an email or click to open a chat and we can advise on sourcing. Adding rib protection to this basket would increase the total, but the amount depends on the type and standard required.

What the complete basket costs

The four items we can supply come to £283.53. Garreth’s observation on this: the helmet at £86.73 is the cheapest single item in the basket, which is unusual. On circuit racing kit the helmet is always the largest line. On karting kit the suit and boots are the bigger costs, and the OMP Circuit Evo 2 undercuts both.

The one upgrade worth flagging, if your budget stretches to it: the Sparco Rookie kart suit at £89.40 is a two-layer suit, which is better suited to longer outdoor karting sessions. That is a £3.60 difference from the cheapest suit in the basket. On a very tight budget, it is worth considering.

If you want to compare options within each category, we have affordable guides covering kart suits, karting boots, karting gloves, and the five most affordable karting helmets. For anyone moving up from karting to circuit racing, the complete FIA legal kit guide covers the same method for FIA-approved race kit.

For most indoor karting venues and leisure outdoor circuits, no. For club karting under Motorsport UK regulations, it depends on your specific series and class. Some championships require CIK homologation; others do not. The OMP Summer-K in this basket does not carry CIK approval. If your series requires it, confirm with us and we can point you to the options that do.

Most UK indoor karting venues and many club circuits accept ECE 22-06 helmets. For competitive karting under Motorsport UK regulations, check your series rulebook: some championships specify CIK or FIA helmet standards, not ECE 22-06. If you are unsure, call or email us and we will look at the relevant regulation with you.

Rib protection is recommended for competitive karting and is worth having if you are racing regularly. Some venues require it for younger drivers. We do not currently stock kart rib protectors. Drop us an email or click to open a chat and we can advise on sourcing.

The OMP Summer-K at £85.80 is a single-layer suit without CIK approval, suited to indoor and leisure outdoor karting. The OMP KS-4 at £138 is a more substantial suit that does not carry a Non-CIK designation on its listing, though you should confirm its approval status with us before ordering for a specific championship. The price difference is £52.20.

If you want to confirm what your venue or series requires before ordering, or check whether a specific item meets your regulations, give us a call on 0115 9893488. Cameron can go through the kit requirements before the order goes out.
