OMP Fire Extinguishers For 2022: Hand Held, Mechanical And Electrical

Safety equipment news, June 2022

We now have twelve OMP fire extinguishers on the website for 2022. They fall into three types: hand held extinguishers, mechanical plumbed-in systems and electrical plumbed-in systems, so there is something for the workshop and paddock as well as for the car itself.

Sizes run from a small 2kg hand held unit up to 4.25 litre plumbed-in systems. Here is how the range breaks down, and what each type is for.

  • Twelve OMP fire extinguishers now on our website for 2022
  • Three types: hand held, mechanical and electrical
  • Hand held units in 2kg and 4kg dry powder

Hand held extinguishers

OMP makes two dry powder hand held extinguishers in the range. The 4kg unit has a steel bottle, stainless steel mounting brackets, quick release straps and a flexible hose to direct the powder. It is sized for the paddock or the workshop, where you want plenty of capacity close to hand.

The 2kg unit has an alloy bottle and comes with its mounting bracket and quick release steel straps. It is a sensible size for the workshop wall or a service vehicle.

Our guide to hand held extinguishers covers the different fillings and where each one belongs.

Mechanical plumbed-in systems

A mechanical system is fired by pulling a cable, so it does not need any power from the car. OMP’s Black Collection is a mechanically operated, plumbed-in system that comes in two sizes. It is supplied with stainless steel mounting brackets, pipework, nozzles and the fitting hardware, and OMP aims it at clubman saloon racers and rally drivers who want a sound system at a sensible price.

There is also the OMP Sport 4.25 litre mechanical kit. It has a steel bottle filled with OMP’s water based, film forming foam.

Electrical plumbed-in systems

An electrical system is fired from a switch, which makes the activation points easier to place in a tight cockpit. The OMP White Collection is a 4.25 litre system with an aluminium bottle. It is listed on FIA Technical List 16 and is designed for enclosed cockpit cars. The kit includes the parts needed for the installation, and the parts are also available on their own.

The Platinum Collection is the ultralight option. The bottle is only 100mm in diameter, it is filled with OMP’s Eco Life fluid, and it discharges through six nozzles: four to the engine bay and two to the cockpit. The fitting hardware, plumbing and brackets all come in the kit.

Before you buy any plumbed-in system, check what your championship asks for. Garreth’s advice is to read your event rules first and then choose the system, not the other way round. Our explainer on OMP extinguisher systems goes into the model names in more detail.

Twelve, covering hand held, mechanical and electrical types.

A mechanical system is fired by a pull cable and needs no power, while an electrical system is fired from a switch.

Yes. The White Collection 4.25 litre system is listed on FIA Technical List 16.

Six, with four aimed at the engine bay and two at the cockpit.
