Perfect Sparco And OMP Steering Wheel Setup For Your Mini R53
Mini R53 steering wheel guide
The Mini Cooper S R53 is a favourite for fast road use, track days and club motorsport, and a steering wheel change is one of the most common upgrades we are asked about for it. The standard wheel is large and built around an airbag; an aftermarket wheel is smaller, lighter to hold and gives you the choice of grip, size and reach.
This guide covers the three parts you need for an R53: the boss kit that fits the column, an optional quick release, and a Sparco or OMP wheel to go on the end.
- The R50, R52 and R53 Minis (2001 to 2007) share a boss kit
- B-G Racing BG8179: collapsible, drilled 6x70 mm and 6x74 mm
- OMP OD/1960BM784A: non-collapsible, drilled 6x70 mm
- Every Sparco and OMP wheel uses 6x70 mm, so either boss kit takes them
- A quick release is optional and brings the wheel closer
- Removing the factory wheel removes the airbag

What is on this page
Step one: the boss kit
The boss kit is the only part that is specific to the car. For the first BMW-era Minis, the R50 and R53 hatchbacks and the R52 convertible from 2001 to 2007, we have two options.
| B-G Racing BG8179 | OMP OD/1960BM784A | |
|---|---|---|
| Fits | Mini R50, R52, R53 (2001 to 2007) | Mini R50, R52, R53 (2002 to 2007) |
| Wheel bolt pattern | 6x70 mm and 6x74 mm | 6x70 mm |
| Type | Collapsible | Non-collapsible |

The B-G Racing hub is drilled for both common bolt patterns, so it also takes Nardi and Personal wheels if you change your mind later, and it is a collapsible design. The OMP hub is drilled 6×70 mm, which covers every Sparco, OMP and MOMO wheel. For the newer F55, F56 and F57 Minis a different B-G hub is needed, and the later R56 generation has its own OMP kit, so check your model before you order.
Step two: the wheel
Sparco and OMP wheels both use the 6×70 mm bolt pattern, so any of them bolts straight onto either boss kit. The choices that matter are size, dish and grip.
Size. A 330 mm wheel is a popular choice in an R53. It is noticeably smaller than standard and quicker in the hand, while still giving enough leverage. A 300 mm wheel such as the OMP Trecento is more of a race car choice; a 350 mm wheel suits a bigger driver or anyone who wants a lighter feel at parking speeds.
Dish. A flat wheel, such as the Sparco R383 Champion, keeps the rim near the standard position. A deep dish wheel, such as the 95 mm OMP Corsica, brings the rim towards you, which helps if you sit low and far back in a bucket seat.
Grip. Leather suits a road car driven without gloves. Suede grips better, especially with gloves, and suits track use, but needs more care.

Step three: a quick release, if you want one
A quick release sits between the boss kit and the wheel. It lets you lift the wheel off in seconds, which makes getting in and out past a bucket seat, harness or cage much easier, and it is a simple theft deterrent. The B-G Racing universal quick release takes both 6×70 mm and 6×74 mm wheels and brings the wheel about 50 mm closer to you, so factor that into your choice of dish.
If you are unsure how the parts stack together, our guide to boss kit and steering wheel compatibility explains it step by step.
Before you fit it
The R53’s standard wheel has an airbag. Taking it off removes the airbag, and the car will usually show a warning light unless that circuit is dealt with. Keep the original wheel, and think about how the car is used before you make the change.
Garreth’s advice is to sit in the car in your normal driving position and measure from the dash to where you want the rim, then choose dish and quick release to suit. It saves buying a wheel that ends up too close or too far away. Our steering wheel dish guide goes into more detail.
What boss kit fits a Mini R53?
The B-G Racing BG8179 and the OMP OD/1960BM784A both fit the R50, R52 and R53 Minis.
Will a Sparco or OMP wheel fit the R53 boss kit?
Yes. Both brands use the 6×70 mm bolt pattern, which both boss kits accept.
What size steering wheel suits a Mini R53?
A 330 mm wheel is a popular choice; 300 mm suits a race car and 350 mm gives more leverage.
Do I need a quick release on my R53?
No. It is optional, but it makes getting in and out easier with a bucket seat or cage.
Does the R53 boss kit fit the newer Minis?
No. The R50, R52 and R53 kit is for 2001 to 2007 cars; later Minis need a different hub.
A dual-drilled collapsible hub and a 330 mm Sparco or OMP wheel is a sound base for most R53 builds.
