The Bilstein B8 5100 steering damper for the Jeep Wrangler JK, Bilstein part number 24-158428.
A steering damper does a different job to the dampers on the corners of the car. It sits on the steering linkage and damps the side to side movement that comes back up through the steering, which is what you feel as bump steer, wander and, on a solid front axle, the shimmy that sets in at speed once tyres get bigger or the geometry moves.
The 5100 is Bilstein’s monotube unit for lifted and off-road vehicles, so it is built for the loads a Wrangler puts through the steering on rough ground and for the extra leverage that comes with larger tyres.

About Bilstein
Bilstein have been building dampers in Germany since 1873 and put the first gas-pressure shock absorber into production in 1954. The monotube design that came out of that work is still what separates a Bilstein from a cheap replacement, because the gas and the oil stay separated and the damping does not fade as the damper heats up.
