The Sparco 2.5 litre electronic plumbed in fire system, homologated to FIA 8865-2015. Part number 014779EXP.

The standard is the reason this costs what it does. 8865-2015 is the current FIA plumbed in extinguisher homologation and it appears on FIA Technical List 52. A good number of series have moved from the older Technical List 16 systems to requiring 8865, and if yours has, nothing on List 16 will satisfy the scrutineer whatever it is filled with.

Check your own regulations before you choose, because it is the single most expensive thing to get wrong in a build.

Specification

A 2.5 litre stainless steel bottle holding 3.3kg of extinguishing agent, electrically activated, homologated for closed cockpit saloon cars. The bottle is 302mm long and 110mm in diameter. It is plumbed with one interior nozzle and one for the engine bay, which is the standard arrangement: the cabin nozzle protects the driver and the engine bay nozzle deals with where the fire usually starts.

Supplied with mounting bracket and straps. Also carries MSA approval.

Installing it

Take the 302mm by 110mm to the car before you buy. A plumbed system has to be mounted where a belted in driver can reach the actuator and where a marshal can reach the external pull, and both of those are scrutineered, so the bottle cannot simply go wherever it happens to fit. Bottle orientation matters too.

Tell us the car and the class and we will make sure the system and the fittings suit before anything ships. If you need a hand held bottle alongside it, most regulations require one.

Extinguisher Type

What is the difference between mechanical and electrical systems?
How you set them off. A mechanical system fires by pull cable from the cockpit, an electrical system fires from a button that can sit anywhere and adds an external trigger point for marshals more easily. This is the electrical version. Both plumb into nozzles around the engine bay and cockpit.

Is it accepted by scrutineers?
It carries Technical list 52, MSA Approved status. Extinguisher requirements are set per discipline, including capacity and whether a plumbed system is required, so check your regulations for the exact requirement and ask us if you want us to match a system to your series.

Does it need servicing?
Yes. Extinguishers carry a service date and need periodic servicing to the manufacturer schedule, which scrutineers do check, so factor a service into your running costs and note the date on the bottle when it arrives.

Can I install it myself?
A competent home builder can: the work is mounting the bottle securely, routing the plumbing to the nozzle points, and rigging the trigger. The instructions cover the layout, and we can advise on nozzle placement for your car if you tell us what you are building.
