Open-face helmet with ECE 22.05 approval. Part number SPA003317C. For track days and racing where open-face helmets are permitted under the event or series regulations.

The shell is Sparco’s ATM composite material. The carbon-effect finish on this helmet is a cosmetic surface treatment, not the structural material; the underlying shell is a thermoplastic composite rather than woven carbon fibre. That distinction matters for approvals: the ECE 22.05 rating applies to the shell’s protective performance, not the finish. At £125 for a composite-shell open-face with ECE approval, the price is competitive.

ECE 22.05 is the standard this helmet holds, not the current ECE 22.06. Some competition classes have moved to requiring 22.06 in recent seasons. Check your series regulations before buying: the homologation on the sticker governs whether you can compete, not the helmet’s general approval status.

Available in XS (53 to 54cm) through XL (61 to 62cm), covering most adult head sizes. Includes an anti-dazzle peak.

If you need a full-face helmet, the Sparco X-Pro (003378) is the track day option in the range and comes in at a lower price. Full-face gives better facial and chin protection and is required rather than optional in many competition classes. The Club J1 Carbon is for drivers who prefer open-face or where series regulations specifically permit it.

Track day helmet size guide

Track day helmets are sized model by model, and every size option on the site carries the head measurement inside the name. Measure once, then pick the option whose centimetre range contains your number. The letter on its own will mislead you.

Read the number, not the letterA Sparco track day L is a 60 cm head on the X-Pro, a 58 to 59 cm head on the Gulf and Martini X-Pro, and a 60 to 61 cm head on the Club X1. Same brand, same letter, three different heads.

Measure the head

1One inch above the eyebrowsThen round the widest part at the back. Soft tape, level all the way round.
2Take the largest readingMeasure three or four times and use the biggest number.
3Hair as you driveDown or tied as it will be under the helmet.

A dash means that range has no size at that measurement. The Sparco X-Pro and J-Pro both skip 59 cm, so if you measure 59 you are choosing between an M that may be tight and an L that may be loose. Ring us on that one, or look at the Gulf and Martini X-Pro or the Club X1, which both cover it.

What ECE means for you

Everything in this category is homologated to ECE 22-06 or the older ECE 22.05, which is the European road motorcycle standard rather than a motorsport one. That is what makes these helmets good value for track days, sprints and open pit lane sessions, and it is why they cover a wider size range and cost less than an FIA helmet.

It also means most circuit championships will not accept them, because those require an FIA 8859 or 8860 helmet, or a Snell SA. If you are moving from track days into competition, check your regulations before you buy, and have a look at our motorsport helmet range instead. If you are not sure which side of that line you are on, ring us and we will tell you straight.

Open face or full face

An open face sits differently because there is no chin bar pulling the shell forward, and it is built on a separate set of shells, so do not assume your full face size carries across. The open face options here also suit a road car with a roll cage where getting a full face on and off through a cage bar is awkward.

How it should fit

Snug enough that it is slightly awkward to pull on, with the cheek pads pushing your cheeks up. With the strap done up you should not be able to rotate the helmet forwards off your head. The lining beds in over the first few sessions, so a helmet that is merely comfortable out of the box will be loose by the end of the season.

Tell us what you are doing with itHead circumference in centimetres and whether it is track days, sprints or a championship. The homologation narrows the choice more than the size does. Call 0115 989 3488 or email Sales@GSMPerformance.co.uk.

Ladders read from the size options on our own products, which carry the head measurement in the size name. All checked 2 August 2026.

Have you written anything about this exact product?
Yes, we have covered this exact product: GSM Performance: Save 15% on a Sparco Club J1 Helmet. That is first-hand coverage from our own builds and showroom, not brochure copy.

How do I get the right size?
Measure around your head at the widest point, about an inch above your eyebrows, and match the centimetres to the size options (this one runs from roughly 53cm to 62cm). The fit should be snug all round with no pressure points, and it should not rotate when you shake your head. Between sizes, try the smaller one first, as linings bed in. Our helmet buying guide covers fit in detail, or call us and we will talk it through.

Can I use it for track days?
Yes. It carries ECE 22.05 approval, the road motorcycle standard, which UK track day organisers accept. What it is not valid for is Motorsport UK competition, which needs a helmet from the FIA and Snell list. If you are heading towards racing, buy once from our motorsport helmet range instead. Our track day kit guide covers what you need for your first sessions.

How do I look after it?
Store it in its bag away from heat and direct sun, clean the shell with mild soap and water only (solvents attack the finish and the shell), and let the lining air out after use. And the big one: after any significant impact, replace the helmet even if it looks fine, as the protective liner is designed to crush once.
