Simpson Hybrid HANS Devices On Display

Showroom news, July 2023

We have four Simpson Hybrid Sport head and neck restraints on display in our showroom, in sizes M, L and XL, so you can see one, try it on and take it home the same day. Sizes XS to XL are listed online.

The Hybrid works differently from a traditional HANS device. It sits on the back and shoulders and is held in place by its own straps, not by the harness, which suits some cars and drivers better.

How the Hybrid differs from a HANS

A traditional HANS device sits over the collarbones and relies on the shoulder straps of the harness to hold it down. The Simpson Hybrid takes a different approach. It rests on the back and shoulders and is held on by straps that go around the body under the arms, so it stays in place without depending on the harness belts.

Because nothing sits over the chest, it is easier to get out of the car without the device catching on other equipment. The Hybrid also uses a sliding tether to the helmet, which Simpson designs to spread the load from the head and keep the head and shoulders more stable, including in side impacts.

The Hybrid Sport is made from composite materials, and is approved to FIA 8858-2010 and SFI 38.1. It is supplied to fit helmets that already have standard HANS posts, or it can be ordered with Simpson's M61 quick release tethers, which let you release it with one pull of a cord. That is handy in rallying, where the helmet comes off and on all day.

It is designed to be used in the forms of motorsport where you would normally wear a 10, 20, 30 or 40 degree HANS device.

Sizing and trying one on

The Hybrid is sized by chest, measured just below the chest muscles while wearing your full racewear. Simpson’s sizes run from XS at 81 to 91cm up to XL at 122 to 132cm. We have M, L and XL on display, and the full size range online.

Garreth’s advice is to try it on in the seat position you drive in, with your helmet, as that is the only way to feel how the straps and tethers sit. Our guide to HANS or Hybrid goes through the choice in more detail.

Our wider HANS range

We have also updated the rest of our HANS devices with current information, prices, sizes and angles. The range covers HANS, Schroth and Stand21, in composite for most drivers and carbon fibre for those saving weight, including the Stilo HANS Zero, a carbon device added in 2022. Standard HANS devices come in angles from 10 to 40 degrees, depending on how upright you sit. Which HANS device do I need? explains angles and sizes.

It is a head and neck restraint that sits on the back and shoulders and is held on by its own body straps, not by the harness.

Yes. It is approved to FIA 8858-2010 and SFI 38.1.

Measure your chest just below the chest muscles while wearing your racewear, and match it to Simpson’s chart from XS to XL.

No. It fits helmets with standard HANS posts, and can be ordered with M61 quick release tethers instead.
