The Complete B-G and MOMO Jaguar Steering Wheel Hub Guide

There is a useful split in the Jaguar boss kit range. Everything from 1996 onwards, the XK8, XK12, XJ8, S-Type, XJ and the final XK, takes the same B-G hub: BG8229. If your Jaguar is post-1996, that is the answer and the chart below will confirm it. The models that take more thought are the earlier ones. The XJ40 in particular changed hub three times between 1987 and 1990, which is the one year-sensitive part of an otherwise clean catalogue.

The Jaguar factory column uses proprietary splines. Aftermarket steering wheels are drilled to the industry-standard 6x70mm bolt pattern, and the boss kit bridges the two. It sets the wheel at the right depth relative to the stalks and the dash, and on post-1996 Jaguars it also determines whether the column can collapse in an impact. The hub is the part you have to get right before anything else matters.

All B-G boss kits are dual drilled, 6x70mm and 6x74mm, so they accept any wheel built to either pattern. MOMO, Sparco, OMP, Simoni, Nardi, Personal and the Mountney M-Range all bolt straight on. MOMO and OMP hubs are 6x70mm only, which covers the vast majority of wheels on the market. B-G cover the Jaguar range with five distinct part numbers across fourteen listings. Most enquiries for modern Jaguars come down to BG8229, the collapsible hub for all models from 1996 to 2014. The earlier solid hubs run the XJ6, XJS, XJR and XJ40 from 1987 onwards, and BG8262 covers every Jaguar from 1968 to 1975.

I have had a few BG8229 builds through the workshop. It fits solidly, the collapsible mechanism does not rattle, and the dual drilling means wheel choice is wide open. The older solid hubs are cast the same way, just without the collapsible column.

MOMO cover the classic XJ era with a single part. MA2201 is the hub for the XJ6, XJS and XJ12 from 1976 to 1986, three separate listings and one physical part. If you are fitting a MOMO wheel to a Series II or III Jaguar, this is the hub to look for. Non-collapsible, as is standard for the range.

OMP offer three Jaguar hubs: one for the 1968 to 1975 era, one for the XJ12 and one for the XJ8. Each is machined specifically for its Jaguar, non-collapsible, and drilled to 6x70mm.

A quick release fits between the hub and the wheel and lets you lift the wheel off in one click. Practical on a track car where the wheel comes off before you climb out, and useful on a road build as a theft deterrent. The B-G and MOMO boss kits use the standard 6x70mm pattern, so any of these quick releases bolt straight on without further adapting.

All four take the same 6x70mm bolt pattern as the boss kits listed above. Fit one between the hub and your wheel and the whole assembly lifts off in one move.

A 350mm wheel suits the Jaguar XJ interior well and is the natural choice for a road build. If you are tracking regularly, 330mm or 320mm gives faster inputs without making the car awkward on the street. Any wheel paired with a B-G dual-drilled hub takes either the 6x70mm or 6x74mm pattern.

Jaguar gets a reputation for being awkward with aftermarket wheels, and the XJ40 years take a bit of care. Outside that era the range is clean: one hub for every modern Jaguar, one MOMO part for the 1976 to 1986 classics, and BG8262 or the OMP equivalent for anything pre-1976.
