The Five Most Affordable Hand Held Fire Extinguishers

Hand held fire extinguishers from £82.80

Eight hand-held fire extinguishers in the category. Five of them sit between £82.80 and £174. The cheapest unit on this page is the OMP 2kg dry powder at £82.80. It is approved to EN3 and MSA, and it does not hold FIA approval. If your series specifies FIA, the entry price on this page is £96, not £82.80. That £13.20 extra buys FIA approval on the OMP 3kg dry powder. Everything from £96 upwards here is FIA and MSA approved.

Three of the five picks are dry powder. The other two are foam. The picks are sorted cheapest first. The agent column matters as much as the price column, because it is the one most people skip when comparing purely on cost. Dry powder works on fuel fires but it makes a serious mess. Foam from £124.80 does not.

  • The cheapest unit on this page is the OMP 2kg dry powder at £82.80 inc VAT. It holds MSA approval. It does not hold FIA approval.
  • The cheapest FIA and MSA approved unit is the OMP 3kg dry powder at £96. It costs £13.20 more than the OMP 2kg.
  • All three picks under £106 are dry powder. Dry powder is effective but leaves an engine bay in a state that usually needs stripping to clean properly.
  • The first foam unit on this page is the OMP Ecolife Plus at £124.80. Foam is washable. The step from the 4kg powder at £105.60 is £19.20.
  • Two mechanical fire extinguisher systems in the category are not on this page. A hand-held unit is not a substitute for a plumbed-in system in all classes.

The OMP 2kg dry powder is not FIA approvedThe OMP 2kg holds EN3 certification and Motorsport UK (MSA) approval. It does not hold FIA approval. For a club event running under the Motorsport UK route where your class does not specify FIA, it is a legal choice. If your regulations name FIA, the OMP 3kg at £96 is the next pick up. It is £13.20 more. Check your event supplementary regulations, not just the championship guide. If you are not sure which approval your series requires, our FIA fire extinguisher homologations guide explains the distinction. Or drop us an email or click to open a chat and we will confirm it for your specific series.

OMP 2kg dry powder, £82.80. The cheapest unit on this page. EN3 and MSA approved, not FIA. At most club sprint and hillclimb events where MSA approval covers the class requirement, the 2kg does the job. Garreth’s view is that if MSA is what your series accepts and you are watching the budget, this is a reasonable choice. The step to the OMP 3kg at £96 is £13.20 and brings FIA approval. If you ever move to a championship that specifies FIA, the 2kg is the one you replace.

OMP 3kg dry powder, £96. The cheapest FIA and MSA approved unit on this page. £13.20 more than the 2kg. Dry powder, 3kg. For most buyers comparing these two, the £13.20 feels different once the approval difference is clear, and nearly everyone ends up here. The step up to the 4kg is £9.60 more, for a kilogram of extra agent.

OMP 4kg dry powder, £105.60. One more kilogram of agent over the 3kg, for £9.60. FIA and MSA approved. These three dry powder picks are the cheapest on the page, and they are also the ones that create the most work afterwards. Dry powder is an abrasive that gets into everything: the intake, the electrics, the brake calipers. It corrodes alloy over time and leaves an engine bay in a state that usually needs stripping to clean out properly. The first foam option is at £124.80. That is £19.20 more than this pick.

OMP Ecolife Plus 2.4 litre, £124.80. The first foam unit on this page. Foam handles fuel fires well, and the cleanup is washable rather than the abrasive residue you get with powder. FIA and MSA approved. Aluminium bottle, 2.4 litres. Garreth’s view is that on a car you intend to keep running, the £19.20 step from the 4kg powder to the Ecolife Plus is usually worth it. The step up to the Sparco AFFF at £174 is a further £49.20.

Sparco AFFF 2.4 litre, £174. The only Sparco unit in the five picks. AFFF stands for aqueous film-forming foam: it lays a suppressant film over burning fuel that cuts off the vapour. FIA and MSA approved, 2.4 litres. Both foam picks here are 2.4 litres and both are FIA and MSA approved. The main difference between the OMP Ecolife Plus at £124.80 and this one is the agent chemistry and the manufacturer. Cameron checks the permitted agent against the series regulations before an extinguisher order goes out, because some disciplines specify a particular agent type or restrict powder in certain classes.

The decision on this page comes down to two things: your approval requirement and your agent preference. If your series specifies FIA, the 2kg at £82.80 is not an option and the 3kg at £96 is the floor. If you are building a car you want to use for a few years, the foam picks start at £124.80 and are worth considering from the 4kg powder upwards.

Dry powder or foam: what the agent choice costs

Dry powder and foam are both legal for club and circuit use, and both cover fuel fires. The price gap between the cheapest dry powder pick and the cheapest foam pick on this page is about £42. That £42 is the cost of the agent decision, and it is worth thinking through before ordering.

Dry powder is a fine abrasive. It gets inside an engine bay, into the intake, the loom, the brake calipers. Over time it is corrosive to alloy. A car that has had a powder discharge in the engine bay typically needs stripping, and that cleanup costs more than the money saved on the cheaper extinguisher. The three powder picks here are at £82.80, £96 and £105.60, and they are still the most widely bought hand-held extinguishers in club motorsport. If the car is not one you plan to run for more than a season, the powder picks make sense on cost alone.

Foam lands on burning fuel and suppresses it. It is washable. A car that has had the Ecolife Plus into the engine bay is in a much better state than one that has taken the 4kg powder. Both foam picks here are FIA and MSA approved, both are 2.4 litres. The OMP Ecolife Plus at £124.80 has an aluminium bottle; the Sparco AFFF at £174 uses a different agent chemistry. When someone rings us about an extinguisher for a car they are putting together on a budget, Cameron tends to mention both foam options, because by the time the extinguisher is the last thing on the list the £42 from the cheapest powder to the cheapest foam can feel bigger than it is.

Whatever agent you choose, the bracket matters as much as the bottle. Cameron checks the bracket specification against the relevant regulations chapter before any extinguisher order goes out. If you are not sure which bracket fits your car or roll cage configuration, drop us an email or click to open a chat before ordering, or bring the car to the Nottingham showroom and we will go through it together. We are on 0115 9893488.

Full detail on these units, mounting and discipline rulesOur guide to hand-held motorsport fire extinguishers covers the full range, mounting positions, bracket types, service intervals and the discipline-specific regulations in more depth. Read the complete hand-held extinguisher guide here.

The OMP 3kg dry powder at £96 inc VAT. It holds FIA and Motorsport UK approval. The OMP 2kg at £82.80 is the cheapest unit on this page but carries Motorsport UK approval only. If your regulations specify FIA, the 3kg is the entry price and the 2kg does not qualify.

No. MSA is the Motorsport UK approval, which is accepted at most domestic club events in the UK. FIA is the international standard. A number of championships and licence-holding events require FIA, and the MSA route alone will not pass scrutineering there. Your event supplementary regulations will say which is required. Our FIA fire extinguisher homologations guide has more on how the two standards relate to each other.

Both work on fuel fires. Dry powder is cheaper and effective, but it is a fine abrasive that gets into engine components, corrodes alloy over time, and typically leaves an engine bay that needs stripping to clean out properly. Foam is washable and causes less residual damage. The cheapest foam unit on this page is the OMP Ecolife Plus at £124.80, which is £19.20 more than the OMP 4kg dry powder at the same FIA-approved level.

Only if your class regulations allow it. Some championships require a plumbed-in system, some accept a hand-held unit, and some require both. The two mechanical extinguisher systems in this category are not on this page. Check your class regulations and the relevant Motorsport UK chapter before buying. Drop us an email or click to open a chat and we will go through the requirement for your specific series.

AFFF stands for aqueous film-forming foam. It forms a thin film over burning fuel that cuts off the oxygen supply and suppresses the vapour. It is very effective on petrol and oil fires, which are the most common type in circuit motorsport. The Sparco 2.4 litre AFFF is FIA and MSA approved.
