The Sparco 2.4 litre hand held extinguisher, filled with AFFF. Part number 014773BXL24.
FIA and Motorsport UK approved for national and international rally use, supplied with mounting brackets and a quick release securing strap. Most regulations that require a plumbed in system also require a hand held bottle in the cabin, so this is usually bought alongside a plumbed kit rather than instead of one.
AFFF against a clean agent
AFFF is a foam and it is very effective on fuel fires, which is what you are actually protecting against in a competition car. It also resists reignition, which matters on a fuel fire that has been knocked down but not cooled. It leaves a residue, which needs cleaning up afterwards. A clean agent such as Novec puts a fire out without the mess, at a higher price. For most people the foam is the sensible buy and the mess is a problem you would be glad to have.
The weight
Total weight is 4.5kg filled, against 2.4 litres of agent. That is worth knowing for two reasons. It is a real load on whatever you mount it to, so the bracket has to go into something structural rather than trim. And it is a fair weight to reach across and unclip one handed while belted in, which is worth trying in the car before you settle on a position.
Mounting
A hand held bottle has to be mounted on a quick release bracket within reach of a belted in driver. A bottle rolling around a footwell is worse than no bottle at all and it will fail scrutineering.
Extinguishers carry a service date and scrutineers check it. If you are buying close to an event, ask us for the date on current stock.
Silver bottle. Tell us your class and we will confirm the size and type your regulations call for.
Is a handheld enough for my car?
It depends on your regulations. Many entry-level disciplines and track day cars only need a securely mounted handheld, while race and stage rally cars typically need a plumbed-in system as well or instead. Check your championship regulations, and ask us if you want a hand deciding between the two.
Is it accepted by scrutineers?
It carries FIA Approved, MSA Approved status. Extinguisher requirements are set per discipline, including capacity and whether a plumbed system is required, so check your regulations for the exact requirement and ask us if you want us to match a system to your series.
Does it need servicing?
Yes. Extinguishers carry a service date and need periodic servicing to the manufacturer schedule, which scrutineers do check, so factor a service into your running costs and note the date on the bottle when it arrives.
