A Sparco 2.0kg hand held extinguisher charged with Novec gas. Part number 014773BXLN2.
Novec is the reason to look at this one. It is a clean agent: it puts a fire out without leaving powder over everything, which means an engine bay or a cabin that has been hit with it can be cleaned up and used again. A dry powder extinguisher discharged inside a car is often the more expensive event of the two.
Approval
FIA approved and MSA approved, so it satisfies the mandatory extinguisher requirement in most UK competition. Check your own regulations for the size and type your class specifies, because 2.0kg hand held is not universally accepted and some classes require a plumbed in system instead.
Mounting
A hand held extinguisher has to be mounted with a quick release bracket within reach of a belted in driver. A bottle rolling around a footwell is worse than no bottle at all and it will fail scrutineering. If you need brackets, ask us.
Extinguishers carry a service date and scrutineers check it. Ask us for the date on current stock if you are buying close to an event.
Silver bottle. If you need a plumbed in system instead, tell us the class and we will point you at the right one.
Is a handheld enough for my car?
It depends on your regulations. Many entry-level disciplines and track day cars only need a securely mounted handheld, while race and stage rally cars typically need a plumbed-in system as well or instead. Check your championship regulations, and ask us if you want a hand deciding between the two.
Is it accepted by scrutineers?
It carries FIA Approved, MSA Approved status. Extinguisher requirements are set per discipline, including capacity and whether a plumbed system is required, so check your regulations for the exact requirement and ask us if you want us to match a system to your series.
Does it need servicing?
Yes. Extinguishers carry a service date and need periodic servicing to the manufacturer schedule, which scrutineers do check, so factor a service into your running costs and note the date on the bottle when it arrives.
