Approved to FIA Technical List 16 and supplied as a complete kit: bottle, plumbing, nozzles, mounting bracket and straps. Everything needed to install an automatic system, which is the point of buying a kit rather than assembling one.
Technical List 16, and the thing to check
List 16 systems are still accepted in a great many series and not in all of them. Some championships have moved to requiring FIA 8865-2015, which appears on Technical List 52. Read your own regulations before you order, because a system that does not satisfy your scrutineer is an expensive ornament.
If your class does specify 8865, the 8865 system is the one to look at instead.
The extinguishant
AFFF foam. It is effective on fuel fires, which is what you are actually protecting against in a competition car, and it is more environmentally friendly than the older agents.
Installing it
The bottle is 302mm long and 110mm in diameter. Measure the space before you order rather than after, because the actuator has to be reachable by a belted in driver and there has to be an external pull a marshal can reach, and both of those are scrutineered. Bottle orientation matters as well.
If you need more capacity, the SP-305 is the 3.9 litre version at 346mm by 130mm.
Most regulations that require a plumbed system also require a hand held bottle. Tell us the class and we will make sure you have both.
What is the difference between mechanical and electrical systems?
How you set them off. A mechanical system fires by pull cable from the cockpit, an electrical system fires from a button that can sit anywhere and adds an external trigger point for marshals more easily. This is the electrical version. Both plumb into nozzles around the engine bay and cockpit.
Is it accepted by scrutineers?
It carries FIA Technical List 16 Approved status. Extinguisher requirements are set per discipline, including capacity and whether a plumbed system is required, so check your regulations for the exact requirement and ask us if you want us to match a system to your series.
Does it need servicing?
Yes. Extinguishers carry a service date and need periodic servicing to the manufacturer schedule, which scrutineers do check, so factor a service into your running costs and note the date on the bottle when it arrives.
Can I install it myself?
A competent home builder can: the work is mounting the bottle securely, routing the plumbing to the nozzle points, and rigging the trigger. The instructions cover the layout, and we can advise on nozzle placement for your car if you tell us what you are building.
