The RW-4 Long Johns are the leg portion of Sparco’s RW-4 race underwear set, approved to FIA 8856-2018. SKU 001782P, available in black or white.
Long johns are the layer between your skin and your race suit. The FIA 8856-2018 approval means they form part of a certified protection stack: suit, balaclava and underwear together give the composite thermal protection the regulation requires. The underwear alone is not enough protection, but it is not optional either if the suit approval assumes it is there.
The RW-4 is Sparco’s relaxed cut underwear line. Within their range that positions it as a comfortable everyday racing option rather than an ultralight performance layer. The material is a soft touch flame retardant fabric, which suits club racers and track day drivers who want solid protection and a comfortable fit for a full day in the seat without the cost of materials found in top level professional underwear.
Sizes, by waist measurement
Six sizes, S through XXXL, and Sparco size them on the waist rather than on a trouser size. S is a 27 to 31 inch waist, which is 68 to 78cm. M is 31 to 34 inches, 78 to 86cm. L is 34 to 36 inches, 86 to 91cm. XL is 36 to 38 inches, 91 to 96cm. XXL is 38 to 41 inches, 96 to 104cm. XXXL is 41 to 43 inches, 104 to 109cm.
Measure rather than guess. Base layers sit against the skin and are meant to fit close, and a size up under a suit gathers behind the knee and at the waistband where the harness sits.
Many drivers find the relaxed cut more comfortable than tighter performance options from the same range, particularly over longer sessions.
If you already have a top from the RW-4 line, these match it. They also work with a balaclava and base layer top from any brand meeting the same FIA 8856-2018 standard. The RW-4 top is sold separately, and the two pieces can be ordered together for a matched set.
