The Sparco RW-4 short sleeve top, from the entry level of their race underwear range. Part number 001797BI.

Flame retardant material in a soft, regular fit, cut to be worn under a suit. The mesh structure is differentiated across the garment, so the panels that need to breathe do and the rest holds its shape rather than riding up under the suit sleeves. Sparco knit it without seams and add their X-Cool treatment, and claim it as the lightest short sleeve fireproof top made.

The approval, said plainly

This is not FIA approved. Approved underwear has to cover the arm to the wrist, and a short sleeve does not, so no short sleeved top will satisfy a scrutineer who is checking for FIA 8856-2018 whatever the fabric is.

Where it earns its place is a hot day when rated protection is not required, club karting, testing and track days, or worn under a long sleeved approved top as an extra layer.

Sizes, by chest measurement

S is a 35 to 38 inch chest, which is 90 to 97cm. M is 38 to 41 inches, 98 to 105cm. L is 42 to 44 inches, 106 to 113cm. XL is 45 to 48 inches, 114 to 121cm. XXL is 48 to 51 inches, 122 to 129cm.

Take your chest measurement rather than working from a shirt size, because underwear is meant to fit close and a size up defeats the point: a loose layer under a suit bunches at the shoulder and rubs.

White, and it washes normally, though it is worth reading the label rather than treating it as an ordinary tee shirt.

Is this FIA approved?
No, this is a comfort layer rather than homologated flameproof underwear, so it does not count where the regulations call for FIA 8856 underwear. It suits karting, testing, and track days. If you race under rules that require FIA underwear, look at the FIA 8856-2018 items in the range, and our guide on whether fireproof underwear is mandatory explains when it matters.

What size should I go for?
Sizes run from S to XXL. Underwear layers should sit close to the skin without pinching, as loose fabric wrinkles under the suit and gets uncomfortable fast. Between sizes, take the smaller one for a base layer.

How do I wash it?
Underwear layers are the one bit of racewear you should wash after every use: cool and gentle, no bleach or fabric softener, air dry. That keeps the suit itself needing far fewer washes. Full routine in our racewear care guide.
