The Sparco Competition and Futura set guide: two suits, one set of boots and gloves
The Sparco Competition and Futura sit next to each other in the catalogue at similar prices, but they are built differently. The Competition is two layers. The Futura is three. At this point in the range, Sparco engineers the Futura with roughly 70% regenerated Aramid fibre through their Full Efficiency process, which brings the material cost down. The Competition uses a virgin Meta and Para Aramid blend. Neither certification changes: both carry FIA 8856-2018.
The Rapid boot is the mid-tier entry in the Sparco boot range, sitting below the Prime and above the K-Run. The Futura glove is the same piece used in the Sparco Gulf and the Sparco Prime set guides on this site.
Competition set: £977.40 inc VAT. Futura set: £891.60 inc VAT. Four suit colourways between the two models, four boot colourways, four glove colourways. All three pieces carry FIA 8856-2018.

Where these suits sit
I’m Cameron. This guide covers two suits rather than one, because the Competition and Futura often come up together. They sit next to each other in searches, they’re priced within £90 of each other, and they share the same boots and gloves. The difference between them is not one you’d spot on the hanger.
The Competition is the one I’d default to. It’s a two-layer suit with virgin Meta and Para Aramid, lighter for its protection level than the Futura. The Futura is a three-layer suit built around Sparco’s recycled Aramid process. If you’re buying your first FIA 8856-2018 three-piece and the £85 saving matters, the Futura is a legitimate choice. If it doesn’t, take the Competition.
The Prime guide and the Gulf guide on this site cover the other Sparco FIA 8856-2018 sets. This one sits between the entry level and the Prime.
The counterintuitive layer count
The Futura has three layers and costs less than the Competition. The Competition has two layers and costs more. The explanation is in the materials. The Futura uses approximately 70% regenerated Aramid fibre, which reduces material cost. The Competition uses a premium virgin Meta and Para Aramid blend, which costs more per unit weight. Both carry FIA 8856-2018. The layer count does not determine which is safer: the certification does.
Full Efficiency: what it means
Sparco’s Full Efficiency label refers to their recycled Aramid process. Aramid fibre from end-of-life racing suits and production offcuts is reclaimed, processed and reblended. The Futura suit incorporates around 70% of this material. The fabric still passes FIA 8856-2018 testing. The trade-off against virgin Aramid is slightly increased bulk for the same thermal protection level, which is why the Futura ends up as a three-layer build.
Where these suits sit in the Sparco FIA range
Below this tier: the Sparco KS-7 and similar entry-level FIA 8856-2018 suits. Above this tier: the Sparco Prime (HOCOTEX 2-layer, guide on this site) and the Sparco Superleggera at the top. The Competition sits between the bulk of the FIA catalogue and the premium tier. The Futura is aimed at a driver who needs a full FIA 8856-2018 three-piece at a competitive price without dropping to the very bottom of the range.
Sparco’s own pairing
Sparco list the Rapid boot and the Futura glove as the mid-tier set accessories on their product pages. The Rapid uses a similar mesh synthetic upper construction to the suits’ panel layout, which is why the colourways align. The Futura glove appears in three guides on this site: the Gulf guide, the Prime guide, and this one. The specification is the same product in all three.
The Competition suit
The Sparco Competition Race Suit is FIA 8856-2018 and SFI 3.2A/5. Two-layer construction with virgin Meta and Para Aramid. Six colourways: Black, Black & Red, Black & Yellow, Blue, White & Red, White & Black & Orange. Sizes 46 to 64.
Two-layer Aramid suits run lighter and less bulky at the cuffs and collar than three-layer equivalents. The Competition’s panel layout is the same across all six colourways: the body panels, shoulder yokes and outer arm inserts carry the accent colour. Sparco race suit sizing runs slightly short in the torso; if you have a long body or sit between sizes, go one size up. Use the full measurement set, not jacket size.
The six colourways are not all equal for three-piece matching. Black & Yellow, Black & Red and White & Red have the best Rapid boot pairings. Blue and White & Black & Orange have no close boot colour match. Full details in the colour matching section below.

The Futura suit
The Sparco Futura Race Suit is FIA 8856-2018. Three-layer construction using approximately 70% regenerated Aramid fibre. Four colourways: Black & Fluorescent Yellow, Black & Grey, Black & Green, Red. Sizes 46 to 64.
The recycled Aramid content is not a compromise in certification terms: the suit passes the same FIA 8856-2018 thermal protection test as the Competition. The trade-off is that three layers of regenerated Aramid produce a slightly heavier, stiffer suit than two layers of virgin Aramid. On a hot day at a national championship round, that difference is noticeable if you are sensitive to it. Most drivers at club level won’t notice it in a session.
The Futura’s four colourways all work as three-piece sets except Black & Green, where there is no Rapid boot colour match. The Black & Grey and Red colourways have strong pairings across all three pieces.

The Rapid boots
The Sparco Rapid Race Boots are FIA 8856-2018. A soft mesh synthetic upper, combined lace and velcro strap, thin rubber sole. Four colourways: Black & Grey, Fluro Yellow & Black, Red & Black, White & Black. Sizes EU 38 to 47.
The Rapid sits in the mid-tier of the Sparco boot range. It is lighter and more flexible than the Prime Evo boot in the Sparco Prime guide. The velcro strap over the lace gives a consistent fit without the pressure points you can get from a tight lace on a long stint. EU sizing runs standard; most drivers take their usual shoe size.
The Futura gloves are covered separately in the Sparco Prime guide and the Gulf guide. The specification is the same product in all three sets.

The Futura gloves
The Sparco Futura Race Gloves appear in three set guides on this site: the Gulf guide, the Prime guide and this one. The full specification, colourway run and sizing chart are in the Gulf guide.
For this set, what matters: four colourways (Black & Fluorescent Yellow, White & Black, Black & White, Black & Green), FIA 8856-2018, sizes S to XL. Black & Fluorescent Yellow links best to the yellow suit and boot combination. Black & White or White & Black works against any neutral or dark suit.

Which colours go together
The strongest three-piece colourway in the range. All three products share the black and fluorescent yellow palette. The yellow accent shades vary slightly between suit, boots and gloves but read as one coordinated set.
White suit links directly to white boots and gloves. There is no red in the Rapid or Futura glove range, so the accent drops out at the accessories but the white base reads as a clean coordinated set.
Any black or dark suit works here. Black & Grey boots and Black & White gloves give a clean neutral set across both suits. Works equally well with the Futura Black & Grey suit.
The colourways, shown
01 / 04Competition Black & Yellow
The 2-layer Competition suit with a full yellow three-piece. Competition Black & Yellow plus Rapid Fluro Yellow & Black boots and Futura Black & Fluorescent Yellow gloves.
02 / 04Competition White & Red
White base ties all three pieces together. The red drops out at the accessories but the white-dominated set reads cleanly.
03 / 04Futura Black & Yellow
The Futura version of the yellow set at a lower price point. Same boot and glove colourways as the Competition yellow set.
Fit and sizing
| Piece | Sizes | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Sparco Competition Race Suit | 46–64 (10 sizes) | Chest, waist, inside leg and height together. Sparco race suit sizing runs slightly short in the body; go one size up if between sizes or if you have a long torso. |
| Sparco Futura Race Suit | 46–64 (10 sizes) | Same sizing as the Competition. The Futura has a slightly looser cut due to the three-layer build; if in doubt, measure before ordering. |
| Sparco Rapid Race Boots | EU 38–47 | Measure foot length in cm against the Sparco boot size chart. Most drivers find their standard shoe size works. EU sizing runs consistent. |
| Sparco Futura Race Gloves | S, M, L, XL | Palm circumference at the widest point of the hand, snug not tight. Glove sizing chart in the Sparco Prime guide and the Gulf guide on this site. |
Both Sparco suits use the same size run (46 to 64) and the same measurement logic: chest, waist, inside leg and height together. Sparco race suit sizing tends to run short in the body relative to a road jacket of the same chest size. Use the full set of measurements against the Sparco size guide, not jacket size. If measurements fall between sizes, take the larger.
Glove sizing chart: full chart in the Gulf guide.
What else at this level
The Competition and Futura sit in a competitive tier. The main alternatives we stock with set guides:
OMP Sport: two-layer FIA 8856-2018, the lowest-cost OMP full three-piece. Set guide on this site. Cheaper than both Sparco suits.
OMP One S: Super Light three-layer FIA 8856-2018. Set guide on this site. Between the Futura and the Sparco Prime in price.
Sparco Prime: HOCOTEX 2-layer FIA 8856-2018. Set guide on this site. A step up from the Competition in construction and price.
My verdict
I’m Cameron. Here is the short version: if you are comparing these two suits side by side, take the Competition. The two-layer construction and the virgin Aramid blend produce a noticeably better suit to wear at the same approval level. The £85 extra is worth it.
The Futura is not a bad suit. The Full Efficiency recycled Aramid process is a genuinely interesting approach and the FIA 8856-2018 certification is the same. If you are on a tighter budget and the £85 is the deciding factor, the Futura gives you the same three-piece set up with the same boots and gloves. You will not notice the difference at scrutineering.
The Rapid boot is solid at this level. Nothing spectacular, but it fits well, it covers the ankle properly, and the four colourways line up with the suits. The Futura glove at £107.40 is good value across the three sets it appears in on this site.
The fluorescent yellow three-piece (either suit, Rapid Fluro Yellow & Black boots, Futura Black & Yellow gloves) is the most coherent set you can build from this range. If you want a coordinated look and the colour works for you, that is the one to go for.
