The Complete B-G and MOMO Jeep Steering Wheel Hub Guide

Jeep is one of the simplest makes we stock, right up until it is not. I am Cameron, I look after the steering wheel side of things at GSM Performance.

One part, BG8008, covers ten of the sixteen B-G Jeep listings: the pre-1983 Cherokee, the CJ5, the CJ6 B, the 1976 to 1986 CJ7, the CJ-10, CJ-10A and CJ-20 pick-ups, the Renegade, and both Wagoneers. If you have an old Jeep, that is almost certainly your hub.

The catch is the CJ7. It appears twice, once on BG8008 for 1976 to 1986 and once on BG8366 for 1982 to 2001, and those year ranges overlap. If your CJ7 is an early eighties car, read the next section before you order.

Why you need a B-G or MOMO boss kit

An aftermarket wheel will not bolt onto a Jeep column on its own. The boss kit is the part that makes it possible, and it does three jobs at once.

It joins two different fittings

Your column has splines. The back of the wheel has a bolt pattern. The hub is the only part that speaks both.

It sets how far the wheel sits

The hub decides the distance from the dash, which changes your reach to the indicator stalks and the clearance over your knees.

Nothing else to buy

The fixing screws, the Allen key and the horn button retaining ring are all in the box, so nothing stops you halfway through the job.

Between 1982 and 1986 a CJ7 falls inside both listings. BG8008 is a solid hub and BG8366 is a collapsible one, and they are different parts at different prices, so this is not a case where either will do. Send us the chassis number and we will tell you which one your car takes.

The Cherokee splits three ways and is easier: pre-1983 is BG8008, 1984 onward is BG8084, and 1996 to 2001 is BG8366. The Wrangler splits at 1996, with BG8084 for the 1987 to 1995 car and BG8366 for the TJ.

Steering wheel installation explained

So how does a Sparco wheel end up on a MOMO hub? Because nearly every aftermarket motorsport wheel is drilled to the same pattern, six bolts on a 70mm circle, written as 6 x 70mm PCD. MOMO, Sparco, OMP, Simoni Racing and the Mountney M-Range all use it. The hub is chosen by your car, the wheel is chosen by you, and nothing locks you into one brand.

The Jeep B-G boss kit range

Sixteen B-G Jeep hubs, all dual drilled. Most sit at the same money, with the three BG8366 listings a little higher.

BG8008 does the heavy lifting across the older range. BG8084 covers the 1984 onward Cherokee and the 1987 to 1995 Wrangler, BG8366 takes the later Cherokee, CJ7 and Wrangler TJ, and BG8155 is the Pick-Up on its own.

The MOMO and OMP Jeep hubs

MOMO list two Jeep hubs and they are the same part, MK6902, sold under the Cherokee and the Wrangler. It is a collapsible design drilled 6 x 70mm. The OMP hubs sit alongside them here rather than on their own.

OMP add a Cherokee hub and a combined Cherokee, CJ7 and Wrangler TJ hub. Both are a solid, non collapsible design, which is what most track and competition cars run.

The links below run a live search across the store, so they stay current as the range moves. Between the three brands there are twenty Jeep hubs. If your Jeep is not showing up, ask, because several of these share a column with a model that is listed under a different name.

Why not add a steering wheel quick release kit

A quick release sits between the boss kit and the wheel and lets you pull the wheel off the column in a second. Two reasons people fit them. Getting in and out past a fixed wheel in a caged car is awkward, and a wheel that comes off with you is a wheel nobody can drive away with.

B-G Racing quick releaseFittingSuits
UniversalBolt-onMost road and track cars, nothing to modify
StandardBolt-onThe same job in the heavier duty version
Weld-On 3-PointWeld-onA column that is already being cut and welded
Weld-On 6-PointWeld-onAs above, with the stiffer six bolt fixing

All four take the same 6 x 70mm wheels as everything else on this page, so the wheel you choose further down will fit whichever one you pick.

Pair your boss kit with a high performance steering wheel

Once the hub is sorted the wheel is entirely your choice. These are the ones I would put in a Jeep, and I have leaned towards the larger diameters because that is what suits the slow steering and the upright driving position.

In a CJ or a Wrangler the Prototipo at 370mm looks right and gives you the leverage these cars want. If the Jeep is built for green laning rather than looks, the OMP WRC or the OMP Rally are the more practical rims and both take gloves without a fight.

Every wheel we sell is drilled 6 x 70mm, so any of them will bolt to any of the hubs above. The only real decision is diameter and dish, which changes how heavy the steering feels and how close the rim sits to your chest.

Final thoughts

Jeep is a short range that mostly answers itself, as long as you check the CJ7 and the Cherokee against the year splits rather than assuming. The hub is cheap next to the wheel, and getting it right is a case of matching the model and the year in the listing to your own car.

If your CJ7 falls in the overlap, drop us a line and ask for me. Send the chassis number over and I will tell you which hub you need before you spend anything.
