The Complete B-G and MOMO Rover Steering Wheel Hub Guide

Rover is a short range with one awkward gap in it, so it is worth two minutes before you order. I am Cameron, I look after the steering wheel side of things at GSM Performance.

B-G list four Rover hubs: the 100, the SD1 era 2300 to 3500, and the 800 in two year splits. None of them fit a 200, a 400 or a 600. Those three come from MOMO, and MOMO split each of them by whether the car has an airbag, so there are two listings per model and only one of them is yours.

One thing about how the site is organised. Range Rover hubs sit under Land Rover, and the Rover badged classic Minis sit under Mini, so if that is what you are after you want those pages rather than this one.

The in-car photograph in this guide is an AI illustration, generated from our own MOMO wood rim product photography so the wheel and its horn button are the real thing.

Why you need a B-G or MOMO boss kit

An aftermarket wheel will not bolt onto a Rover column on its own. The column has splines, the back of the wheel has a bolt pattern, and the boss kit is the part that joins the two. It also sets how far the wheel sits from the dash, which decides your reach to the indicator stalks and the clearance over your knees.

Both brands machine theirs from cast aluminium and put the fixing screws, the Allen key and the horn button retaining ring in the box, so nothing is missing halfway through the job. The B-G kits are made in Italy and drilled twice, for 6 x 70mm and 6 x 74mm. The MOMO kits are drilled 6 x 70mm.

It joins two different fittings

Your column has splines. The back of the wheel has a bolt pattern. The hub is the only part that speaks both.

It sets how far the wheel sits

The hub decides the distance from the dash, which changes your reach to the indicator stalks and the clearance over your knees.

Nothing else to buy

The fixing screws, the Allen key and the horn button retaining ring are all in the box, so nothing stops you halfway through the job.

The airbag split is the thing to get right. MK4928R is the airbag hub and it covers the 200, the 25, the 400 and the 600 from one part. The cars without an airbag take something different every time: the 200 from 1990 and the 1995 to 2002 400 share MC4905, and the 600 without an airbag is MC4917 on its own.

If you are not sure which your car is, look at the centre of the original wheel rather than the paperwork. And if you would rather we checked, send the registration over and we will tell you which of the two listings you need.

Steering wheel installation explained

So how does a Sparco wheel end up on a MOMO hub? Because nearly every aftermarket motorsport wheel is drilled to the same pattern, six bolts on a 70mm circle, written as 6 x 70mm PCD. MOMO, Sparco, OMP, Simoni Racing and the Mountney M-Range all use it. The hub is chosen by your car, the wheel is chosen by you, and nothing locks you into one brand.

The Rover B-G boss kit range

Four B-G Rover hubs, all at the same money and all dual drilled. BG8343 is the SD1 one, covering the 2300, 2400, 2600 and 3500 from 1977. BG8099 does the Rover 100, and the 800 splits at 1992 between BG8095 and BG8103.

All four are a solid design rather than collapsible, which is what most track and competition cars run.

Our top MOMO Rover boss kit collection

Eight MOMO hubs, all collapsible and all drilled 6 x 70mm, and this is where the 200, 400 and 600 live along with the 25.

MK4928R is the busy one, covering the airbag 200, the 25, the airbag 400 and the airbag 600. MC4905 does the non-airbag 200 and 400, MC4917 is the non-airbag 600 on its own, and MK5607 is the SD1, so an SD1 owner can go either B-G or MOMO depending on which design they want.

The links here run a live search across the store, so they stay current as the range moves. OMP do a Rover 111 and 114 hub and a Rover 800, and there is a Sparco Rover hub as well. Those are a solid, non-collapsible design. Bear in mind that a search for Rover will also turn up Range Rover and the Rover badged Minis, which are covered on the Land Rover and Mini pages. If your Rover is not showing up at all, ask, because several of these cars share a column with a Honda of the same era.

Why not add a steering wheel quick release kit

A quick release sits between the boss kit and the wheel and lets you pull the wheel off the column in a second. Two reasons people fit them. Getting in and out past a fixed wheel in a caged car is awkward, and a wheel that comes off with you is a wheel nobody can drive away with.

B-G Racing quick releaseFittingSuits
UniversalBolt-onMost road and track cars, nothing to modify
StandardBolt-onThe same job in the heavier duty version
Weld-On 3-PointWeld-onA column that is already being cut and welded
Weld-On 6-PointWeld-onAs above, with the stiffer six bolt fixing

B-G Racing do four. The universal and the standard bolt-on versions suit most road and track cars and need nothing modifying. The weld-on 3-point and 6-point are for a car where the column is being cut and welded anyway. All four take the same 6 x 70mm wheels as everything else on this page.

Pair your boss kit with a high performance steering wheel

Once the hub is sorted the wheel is entirely your choice. These are the ones I would put in a Rover, and I have leaned classic because that is what most of these cars want.

In an SD1 a wood rim looks like it belongs, and the Mod.07 Heritage Wood or the California Heritage Wood both suit the tan interiors these cars usually have. For a 200 or a 400 being used properly, something smaller and flatter like the Sparco 345 or the OMP Corsica gives you quicker hands without making it heavy to park.

Every wheel we sell is drilled 6 x 70mm, so any of them will bolt to any of the hubs above. The only real decision is diameter and dish, which changes how heavy the steering feels and how close the rim sits to your chest.

Final thoughts

Rover is a small range but a tidy one once you know that the 200, 400 and 600 are MOMO territory and that the airbag decides which listing you want. The hub is cheap next to the wheel, and getting it right is a case of matching the model, the year and the airbag to the listing.

If you are stuck between two listings, drop us a line and ask for me. Send the registration over and I will tell you which hub you need before you spend anything.
