The Complete B-G and MOMO Saab Steering Wheel Hub Guide

Almost everyone who asks us about a Saab hub owns a 900, and the 900 is the one model in the range that will not give you a straight answer. I am Cameron, I look after the steering wheel side of things at GSM Performance.

There are six separate 900 listings across five part numbers. The year matters, the body matters, and on the Turbo the engine management matters, because the APC cars from 1982 to 1993 take their own hub rather than the standard one for those years.

Everything else is simpler. The 99, the 95 and 96, both 9000s, the 9-3 and the 9-5 have one listing each, and the range is almost entirely B-G apart from a single MOMO part and three from OMP.

The in-car photograph in this guide is an AI illustration, generated from our own OMP product photography so the wheel and its horn button are the real thing.

Why you need a B-G or MOMO boss kit

An aftermarket wheel will not bolt onto a Saab column on its own. The boss kit is the part that makes it possible, and it does three jobs at once.

It joins two different fittings

Your column has splines. The back of the wheel has a bolt pattern. The hub is the only part that speaks both.

It sets how far the wheel sits

The hub decides the distance from the dash, which changes your reach to the indicator stalks and the clearance over your knees.

Nothing else to buy

The fixing screws, the Allen key and the horn button retaining ring are all in the box, so nothing stops you halfway through the job.

The 900 in full. The 1970 to 1978 car takes BG8345, which it shares with the 99. The 1979 to 1993 car takes BG8105, unless it is an APC Turbo from 1982 to 1993, which takes BG8106 instead. The 900i from 1989 to 1993 takes BG8107, and so does the pre-1993 EP Cabrio. The 1994 to 1998 car moves to BG8199.

If your car sits near one of those boundaries, or you are not certain whether yours is an APC car, send us the registration and we will check it rather than let you guess.

Steering wheel installation explained

So how does a Sparco wheel end up on a MOMO hub? Because nearly every aftermarket motorsport wheel is drilled to the same pattern, six bolts on a 70mm circle, written as 6 x 70mm PCD. MOMO, Sparco, OMP, Simoni Racing and the Mountney M-Range all use it. The hub is chosen by your car, the wheel is chosen by you, and nothing locks you into one brand.

The Saab B-G boss kit range

Thirteen B-G Saab hubs, covering the 95 and 96, the 99, all six 900 variants, both 9000s, the 9-3 and the 9-5. Most sit at the same money, with the Series 1 9-3 the one exception at a higher price.

The older cars are a solid design and the later ones are collapsible: the 9-5 on BG8197, the 1994 to 1998 900 on BG8199, the 1992 to 1998 9000 on BG8198 and the Series 1 9-3 on BG8231.

The MOMO and OMP Saab hubs

MOMO list one Saab hub, MA6610R for the 9-3 from 2002. Worth noting that this one is a solid design rather than the collapsible type MOMO usually supply.

OMP add three: the 900, the 900 Turbo and the 99. All are solid, non collapsible parts, which is what most track and competition cars run, and all are drilled 6 x 70mm.

The links below run a live search across the store, so they stay current as the range moves. Between the three brands there are seventeen Saab hubs. If your car is not showing up, ask, and send the registration so we can match it to the right year split.

Why not add a steering wheel quick release kit

A quick release sits between the boss kit and the wheel and lets you pull the wheel off the column in a second. Two reasons people fit them. Getting in and out past a fixed wheel in a caged car is awkward, and a wheel that comes off with you is a wheel nobody can drive away with.

B-G Racing quick releaseFittingSuits
UniversalBolt-onMost road and track cars, nothing to modify
StandardBolt-onThe same job in the heavier duty version
Weld-On 3-PointWeld-onA column that is already being cut and welded
Weld-On 6-PointWeld-onAs above, with the stiffer six bolt fixing

All four take the same 6 x 70mm wheels as everything else on this page, so the wheel you choose further down will fit whichever one you pick.

Pair your boss kit with a high performance steering wheel

Once the hub is sorted the wheel is entirely your choice. These are the ones I would put in a Saab, and I have leaned towards the classic end because that is what most of these cars are now.

In a 900 Turbo the Montecarlo or the Prototipo look like they belong and the rim is thick enough to hold properly. If the car gets used hard, the OMP WRC or the Sparco 345 give you something smaller and quicker without making the parking heavy. The Mod.07 Heritage Wood suits a 99 or an early 900 with an original interior.

Every wheel we sell is drilled 6 x 70mm, so any of them will bolt to any of the hubs above. The only real decision is diameter and dish, which changes how heavy the steering feels and how close the rim sits to your chest.

Final thoughts

Saab comes down to the 900. Get the year, the body and the APC question right and the rest of the range is one listing per model. The hub is cheap next to the wheel, and it is worth two minutes of checking rather than sending the wrong one back.

If you are stuck between two of the 900 listings, drop us a line and ask for me. Send the registration over and I will tell you which hub you need before you spend anything.
