Top Steering Wheel and Boss Kit Recommendations for the Land Rover Discovery 1

A customer asked us this week about a 1992 Discovery and a MOMO Indy Heritage wheel they already owned. The wheel was sorted. The question was which boss kit it bolts to, and on a Discovery that comes down to the year of the car.

Cameron does the fitment checks here and his first move is always the same: get the year, then look at the column. Garreth’s first move is to ask what the Discovery actually does, because one that tows and wades wants a different wheel from one that sits outside the pub on a Sunday.

Everything below is kit we list, and the prices are the ones on the live listings with VAT included. The interior picture above is an illustration of a modified Discovery, not a customer car, and the product photography is ours. The button on each card always shows today’s price.

The bit that makes the wheel easy: 6x70mm and 6x74mm

The B-G Discovery boss kits are drilled for both 6x70mm and 6x74mm bolt patterns. The listings name MOMO, Sparco and OMP for 6x70mm and Nardi for 6x74mm, so a boss kit from this page takes most of the wheels people ask us about.

That splits the job into three decisions that do not get in each other’s way:

The boss kit

Chosen by the year of your Discovery. This is the part that has to be right.

The wheel

Chosen by you. Size, dish and rim material come down to taste and how the car is used.

The quick release

Optional, and chosen by how you use the car. Most road Discoverys do not need one.

Which boss kit fits a Discovery: go by the year

B-G list three Discovery boss kits by year, and they are three separate parts. Each is machined for its own run of cars. The listings warn that steering columns change across facelifts, which is why the year matters more than anything else on the car. All three are non-collapsible aluminium.

Cameron’s rule of thumb: a Discovery 1 takes one of the first two. A 1990 to 1994 car takes the first kit, and a 1994 to 1998 car takes the second. The 1999 to 2002 kit is a different part again, for the Series 2 cars that followed, and our Land Rover hub guide covers the rest of the Land Rover range.

Where each boss kit sits on the calendar

1994 appears in two listings because the car changed that year, and that is the one place we check by hand. Garreth would start from the registration because it is the quickest thing for you to send. Cameron prefers a photo of the column with the old wheel off, because it settles any argument. We take either, and we confirm the right kit before you order.

OMP lists three Discovery boss kits as well, at £79.34, £89.78 and £99.18 inc VAT, with no years in the listing titles. Because the titles do not say which car each one fits, we match them to your Discovery before you order rather than leave you to guess.

The five wheels we would put in a Discovery

How far the rim sits towards you

Dish is the depth of the rim in front of the spokes. A flat wheel sits furthest away, and a deep dish brings the rim closer to your chest. Every bar is drawn to the same scale from the figures in our listings.

Best for the period look

MOMO Indy Heritage

The wheel our customer already owned, and it suits the car: a wood rim, drilled aluminium spokes and 37mm of shallow dish. Garreth would buy it for a tidy Discovery without a second thought, and Cameron asks first how much of the car’s life is spent in the rain.

Best for a leather classic

MOMO Retro

Leather with white stitching and brushed aluminium spokes, and a 360mm rim that is ten millimetres bigger than the Indy Heritage. It is the cheaper of the two period wheels and the bigger rim gives you a little more leverage.

Best for a sportier feel

Sparco 345

The sporty pick, with 63mm of semi dish that brings the rim towards your chest. Cameron likes it with a bucket seat. Garreth thinks it looks too modern on a Discovery of this age.

Best for a bigger rim

OMP Velocita 380

At 380mm this is the biggest rim of the five, with a flat face and a suede grip. Size is leverage, so a big wheel is the easy one to turn, and it keeps your hands clear of the dash.

Best for a working Discovery

OMP Sand

The least expensive wheel on this page, 380mm with a flat face and a leatherette rim. For a Discovery that works for a living it does the job and leaves budget for a quick release or a seat.

Quick release, and whether you need one

A quick release sits between the boss kit and the wheel and lets you pull the wheel off. The main reason to fit one is getting in and out: with a bucket seat and a harness, or a cage with a door bar, the wheel is in the way. The security argument is weaker than it used to be.

Standard interior apart from the wheel

Cameron would skip it and keep the wheel fixed.

Bucket seat, harness or cage

Fit one. Lifting the wheel off is what makes the car usable.

Weld-on units are the cheaper way in, but the column has to be machined, so that is a job for someone who has done it before. Bolt-on units cost more and go straight on. The B-G universal quick release is drilled for both common patterns, so it can move between cars.

The spacer that sets the reach

If the wheel sits too far from you, or too close, a B-G alloy spacer sits between the boss kit and the wheel and moves it in fixed steps. Cameron measures the reach with the driver sitting in the car, which beats guessing. The B-G alloy 6 bolt steering wheel spacers are drilled for both 6x70mm and 6x74mm and start at £33.60 inc VAT, with the price going up by depth.

Fitting it

  1. Disconnect the battery before you start, so the horn and any warning lights behave afterwards.
  2. Take the original wheel off, then fit the boss kit onto the column.
  3. Mark the column and the wheel before you undo the centre nut, so the new wheel goes back on straight.
  4. Route the horn wiring through the boss kit, because the horn contact runs through it.
  5. Fit a spacer now if you are using one, then fit the wheel.
  6. Torque the centre nut properly, and check the wheel is centred with the road wheels straight before you drive it.

The fixings to the column come with the boss kit and the six wheel bolts normally come with the wheel. If you would rather not do it yourself, any local garage can fit it for you. We cannot give fitting instructions that replace the maker’s sheet, so follow the one in the box.

Questions Discovery owners ask us

Which boss kit does a 1992 Land Rover Discovery take?

The B-G Discovery 1990 to 1994 boss kit at £83.99 inc VAT. A 1992 car sits in the middle of that range. Send us the year or the registration and we will confirm it before you order.

Which wheels bolt to the B-G Discovery boss kits?

Any wheel drilled 6x70mm or 6x74mm. The listings name MOMO, Sparco and OMP for 6x70mm and Nardi for 6x74mm, and every wheel on this page is a 6x70mm one.

Does the boss kit come with the wheel bolts?

The fixings that hold the boss kit to the column come with it. The six small bolts that hold the wheel to the boss normally come with the wheel. If yours are missing, ask us for a wheel fixing kit.

My Discovery is a 1999 or later. Which hub is that?

The B-G Discovery 1999 to 2002 boss kit. It is a separate part from the two earlier hubs, so do not use one of those on a later car.

What about a Range Rover Classic, a Defender or an OMP hub?

Our Land Rover hub guide covers the B-G, MOMO and OMP range, and our Defender guide covers the Defender, which uses different hubs from the Discovery.

What we would actually buy

Three builds from the kit above. Garreth would buy the first one for most Discovery owners, and Cameron would move to the third the moment there is a bucket seat in the car. Swap the wheel for any other on this page and the total moves with it.

Final thoughts: year first, then wheel

Pick the boss kit by the year, pick the wheel by how the Discovery is used, and add a quick release only if the seat or the cage makes getting out awkward. Garreth would choose the wheel first and sort the rest afterwards. Cameron says that is backwards, which is why the boss kit question comes first on this page.

If you are stuck between years or wheel sizes, email us with the year of the car and the registration if you have it, or ring 0115 647 8650 and ask for Cameron. A photo of the column with the old wheel off helps too. If you would rather talk it through in person, the showroom is open by appointment.
