Sparco RW-4 shorts, from the entry level of their race underwear range. Part number 001711BBI.

They are made from a soft flame retardant material with a differentiated mesh structure, so the panels that need to breathe do and the rest holds its shape, and the waistband is more heavily elasticated than the body of the short for comfort under a suit.

The thing to understand about the approval

These are flame retardant but they are not FIA or SFI approved, and the reason is their length. Approved underwear has to cover the leg, and a short does not. So if your regulations call for homologated underwear, these will not satisfy the scrutineer no matter what they are made of.

Where they earn their place is a hot day when rated protection is not required, or worn under long approved underwear as an extra layer. Plenty of drivers run them for testing, track days and club karting where the rulebook does not specify.

Sizes, by waist measurement

S is a 31 to 33 inch waist, which is 78 to 85cm. M is 34 to 36 inches, 86 to 93cm. L is 37 to 40 inches, 94 to 101cm. XL is 40 to 43 inches, 102 to 109cm. XXL is 43 to 46 inches, 110 to 117cm.

Take your actual waist measurement rather than your trouser size, because underwear is meant to fit close and a size up defeats the point of it.

White, and they go in the wash normally.

Is this FIA approved?
No, this is a comfort layer rather than homologated flameproof underwear, so it does not count where the regulations call for FIA 8856 underwear. It suits karting, testing, and track days. If you race under rules that require FIA underwear, look at the FIA 8856-2018 items in the range, and our guide on whether fireproof underwear is mandatory explains when it matters.

What size should I go for?
Sizes run from S to XXL. Underwear layers should sit close to the skin without pinching, as loose fabric wrinkles under the suit and gets uncomfortable fast. Between sizes, take the smaller one for a base layer.

How do I wash it?
Underwear layers are the one bit of racewear you should wash after every use: cool and gentle, no bleach or fabric softener, air dry. That keeps the suit itself needing far fewer washes. Full routine in our racewear care guide.
